Those wanky song countdown posts on FB have become even more prevalent and self indulgent as lockdown has gone on......the culprits know who they are.....until they remind you of an absolute BANGER you haven't heard....for...well a couple of months.

This is their best song ever.

    you can get entirely fucked

    great track though aye

It really is. To me it’s their ‘one’ ‘November Rain’ or ‘killing in the name of’ etc. Yet only serious rock nerds have heard of it.

Epic is probably the weakest track on the album

You should watch this then. Starts off with them at their absolute piss-taking best with Reunited and straight into the Real Thing. They hit it proper hard too. Reckon if I was in the audience probably would have broken my neck.

Probably my favourite youtube online concert this one

Yeah seen this a few times, even back then I still reckon Patton overdid the theatrics a little bit to make up for the fact his voice wasn't what it was in the late 80's/early 90's ( which I guess is understandable considering the thrashing it took ). I've got my tickets for next year ( supposed to be in a couple of weeks ) so we'll see. The core of the band is solid as fuck as usual though, Bill Gould is the most underrated Bassist on earth.

ZZ Top fans ( or music fans in general ) would do well to check out the doco on Netflix about them. Loads of people know them from "Legs" and "Gimme all your loving" but personally I love their 70s Blues Rock Classics "Le Grange" and "Tush" far more. Cool to see them all interviewed at their homes and holy shit, hats off to a trio that can stay together without change for FIFTY ONE years. Incredible stuff. Each and every one of them seem like such cool, humble blokes too considering they are legitimate bonafide rock stars.

@MN5 yes, I've got mine for June in London, which I give zero chance of going ahead. Hopefully it just gets delayed. Pearl Jam was cancelled though unfortunately.

Gould is pretty highly rated. You won't find a bassist of a rock / metal band anywhere that doesn't name him as an influence. Bordin is certainly not the most technical drummer, but damn he hits them hard. Gives the concert huge energy.

Yeah I hear that but he gets forgotten when names like Flea/Trujillo/Claypool etc are thrown around.

You want some hard drums ? The kit pressed assault charges against Bill Ward after he was done with them in 1970....

@MN5 what's your thoughts on Trujillo? Is he that good?

Don't get me wrong, he's phenomenal for Metallica and is undoubtedly a fantastic bass player, but his lines rarely stand out on any of their albums since he joined (only 2 to be fair). One of the few people in the world though can look seriously cool when playing Bass. I guess having 12foot long arms helps.

Plenty of hard hitters out there. Bordin always stands out for me tho. No disrespect to others named.

To be fair most of Trujillos awesome virtuoso stuff was with Infectious Grooves. Some serious thrash funk brilliance there. But he does keep it in the pocket exceptionally well for Metallica as well. He’s awesome at the ‘thankless’ stuff for them and whilst it’s cool to not like them they are all exceptional muso’s. ( yes even Lars ).

I think Cliff Burton was a bit overrated though, dying young definitely inflated the legacy somewhat

@MN5 Lars only problem is that he's outdated. But he's also 56, worth well over 100 mill, and tours the world playing stadium gigs in one of the biggest bands on the planet. So I think he's ok with it.

I'm massively outdated in many ways, and I have zero of the upsides he does. He takes his criticism very well too - when your answer is I may not be the best drummer on the planet, but I'm the best drummer for James Hetfield, you are certainly pretty comfortable with yourself.

No real opinion on Cliff myself vs others.

Absolutely. He also freely admitted he has regressed with age, constant touring and not finding the time to practice the basics. His persona can be a bit dickish at times but shit, I can name scores of rock stars worse than him.

I think Cliff Burton studied alot of classical music which hard out metalheads respect quite a bit. Again, I've personally been impressed with others more than him but he definitely left that legacy.

I've been listening to their back catalogue recently here's my view of their order from best to worst. No one will agree, not even close.

Ride The Lightning. It's an epic album from start to finish. I'd love a remix. Top Track - For Whom the Bell Tolls
Master of Puppets. Would love Hetfield to redo this, as the only thing I don't like is his voice. Top Track- Battery
Hardwired. Yes, higher than most will admit, but it's my list - fuck you. Massively influenced by seeing them in HK in one of my last weeks there, and it being the best concert I've been to. Top Track - Halo On Fire
Black. Metallica goes mainstream! Ish. Really heavy but with super radio friendly songs on it which saw the rise (Sandman, Nothing Else Matters). Top Track - My Friend of Misery
Load. I love this album - it takes me back to leaving home for the first time and all the joy of that time of life. It's a bit lighter than Black. Top Track - Outlaw Torn
Death Magnetic. A return to form as the band got through their early noughties wobbles and got their rhythm again as a true four-piece. Sort of a cross between Black & Justice. Top Track - Suicide & Redemption
...And Justice For all. Look, it's a great album. Potential classic and should be in their top 3. But when played on top quality audio equipment, or a bass heavy box, it still sounds like it's being played on a 1970's clock radio. I'm no audiophile, but i LOVE the feeling a hard rock/ metal song can give you when played through great equipment. That will NEVER happen with this album. Top Track - One.
Kill 'Em All. Kind of torn on this. As the songs are excellent, but I just can't stand the Mix and James voice. Top Track - Hit The Lights.
ReLoad. Jason had to go. Not his fault, but the band needed a refresh after Black, Load and then this. They got that initial refresh collosally wrong (as can happen), but then found their groove again a few years later. Top Track - Carpe Diem Baby
    .
    .
    Daylight
    .
    .
St Anger. This album blows. The mix is shit, the songs are weird, and the whole thing is confused. Top Track - St Anger

Just found this online about St Anger. It's spot on accurate - "Michael Christopher said "St. Anger dispenses with the recent spate of radio friendly pleasantries in favor of pedal to the floor thrash, staggered and extended song structures, quick changes and a muddled production that tries to harken back to the Kill 'Em All days. All attempts fail miserably.""

Yeah that was one dysfunctional movie. The Ulrich / Mustaine chat was cringe worthy. Certainly removed any sort of notion that Metal musicians are as hard as the image that goes with them.

Ride the Lightning is my favourite Metallica album. Creeping Death, Fight Fire With Fire, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and Call of Ktulu I can have on repeat endlessly.

I'm not a huge Metallica fan but Ride The Lightning is my favourite album too, as Fade To Black has always been my favourite song of theirs.

Do you Metallica fans listen to other thrash bands? It's not my thing but I do like some Megadeth.

Anthrax yes. Some anyway, their best album isn't on Spotify

Yes Megadeth. Rust in Peace is a fucking rad album.
Does Pantera count as thrash? Probably only Cowboys from Hell
Slayer as well a fair bit.

    @MajorRage
Puppets. The pinnacle of metal in my eyes. Every song is fucking amazing. Leper Messiah is my favourite Metallica song.
Lightening. So raw and thrashy, but amazing. Bells definitely the standout. But Creeping Death...
Justice. Yes, the mix is appalling, but the songwriting and musicianship is amazing. Standout Frayed Ends of Sanity
Black. Polished Metallica is still pretty fucking good. This is a quality rock record. My favourite is Wherever I May Roam
Load. Like you, i rate this album. Half of it is amazing. Half of it is pretty average though. Bleeding Me the standout

You can chuck the rest in a blender as far as i care. Varying levels of okay to pretty fucking average.

But i listen to the above 5 albums (and the 2nd side of Garage Inc) like a fucking lot.

@mariner4life I can't get past the vocals in a lot of the thrash bands. I did see some of the Testament set at the Soundwave festival in Sydney a few years back. Alex Skolnick is a monster guitarist.

@Bovidae a bit. The vocal delivery on most is not my thing. Pantera the exception. Occasionally mega death and slayer on Spotify playlists.

It’s not thrash but only in the last 3-4 years I’ve got into Iron Maiden.
