    What training would be allowed at level 2? 1m distancing is meant to be in effect so no contact training?

    Surely that means no start until 3 weeks after level 1?

    Level 1 has "No restrictions on gatherings". That seems like a long way away.

    We might see exemptions made in Level 2. like NRL in Australia once that starts up it will set a standard for other codes.

    I still think they should include the derby games that have already been played, like the NRL will do, as that should save 2 weeks of playing and then allow a final to be played.

    @Bovidae

    Just skimming through the number of derby matches

    Highlanders 1
    Hurricanes 2
    Blues, Chiefs & Crusaders 3

    I don't think it's about making the fairest rugby decision, it's about putting on the most number of matches

    @Duluth I did realise that the Highlanders had played the least derby games but as one team would have to have a bye each week maybe it could still work.

    I take your point about maximising the number of games for Sky.

    @Bovidae

    Maybe, it would get tough on the Highlanders though. A 7 week round robin with no breaks

    The Hurricanes would get one bye and everyone else two.

    [edit - there's more byes needed than than because of the odd number of teams]

    I'd rather think of it as a new season

    i would watch the shit out of that. Zero points to start. Home and away. Final. Go!

    Question will come down to - what makes more money? Mitre 10 Cup or Super Rugby as to what the season will look like. I don't think the answer is clear cut. You still have to pay all the Mitre 10 Cup players even if they don't have a season. Mitre 10 Cup is 7/8 games per week. Super Rugby is only 2. Super Rugby broadcasting rights can go all around the world but will South Africans or Australians bother watching if it is just NZ teams?

    Then you throw in uncertainty around internationals. That will be the priority

    And club rugby has to fit in somewhere too. The majority of the NPC squads will come from that player pool.

    Right but under his plan you have to get under way in early June. Mitre 10 Cup is scheduled to start on Thursday 6 August. Let's say Super Rugby is scheduled to finish on July 25. To get in 10 rounds the competition would need to start on May 23. Throw in three weeks training before hand and the players basically need to be allowed to start training in one week's time. The earliest the country can go to level 2 is May 11.

    So best case scenario we can get this competition happening if we push Mitre 10 Cup back two weeks. Mitre 10 Cup can probably get put back up to five weeks (you don't want it finishing after November as players need a break before next season).

    Benefits:

    • Cheaper competition without flights to South Africa and Argentina.
    • Less physical demand on players with travel.

    Negatives:

    • Could dilute the strength of NPC.
    • May not drive enough revenue.

    If Australian Super Rugby were as strong as the Reds used to be (in the early days), then the competition could be good. Unfortunately the Rebels remain diluting the player base.

    I'd expect their broadcast partners will inform them which are the big audience fixtures. The problem is the parlous state of RA's finances and the board upheaval. Will they have to accept whatever Fox throws at them for next year?

    Unless RA can be in a strong position, it will simply feel like a continuation of the last 30 years - New Zealand propping up Australian rugby. And given who is rumoured to be pushing for CEO, it doesn't fill one with confidence that support will be remembered.

    @mariner4life super 6, 10 and CANZ were those that was prior to Super rugby.

    Super 10 was top NZ/Aus teams, CANZ series had other teams in NZ, Argentina and Canada (who were expected to become a power...)
