They're taking the piss, surely, if they think an Australian national club comp would work!? No-one would attend beyond exisitng club game crowds, no-one would pay anything even remotely substantial for the TV rights, the ARU's income would be negligible and all their better players would fuck off to the NH.

@shark I recall what Steve Tew said about disbanding Super rugby for NZ and reverting to NPC.

We'd run out of money after the first year.

How would that work when you can't get into Qld? There aren't enough suitable grounds in NSW to make it work.

I realise sports journalists are frantically trying to put out any copy that let's them keep their job, but simply making shit up doesn't help.

@antipodean He does reference a couple of people and comments which suggest he's at the very least put forward his own idea and asked for comment.

    More relevant in this thread.

So Aust wants a return to club rugby?

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/120837105/coronavirus-australias-boardroom-war-will-turn-new-zealand-rugby-on-its-head

If thats their thinking it will kill Rugby in Australia, no one will care not broadcasters they will keep NRL and AFL as strong as it is now.
It will drive all the decent athletes to those sports even more than now.
Big mistake if that is their thinking it will drive Rugby even more underground.

From a NZ perspective the sad thing is Australia in Rugby circles is no longer what it was a fierce rivalry for a time,so fans in NZ will not really care.

The "return to club rugby" suggests emulating the NRL / AFL model where the competition is entered around one major city, with token interstate representation to form a "national" competition.

Fine in theory but two major issues jump out to me:
    a) Unlike say Essendon in AFL or Paramatta in NRL, Randwick does not have a major state-wide following, capable of drawing huge crowds live and on TV.
    b) What happens to the state teams, the 'Tahs and the Reds?

Spot on that is what I mean by pushing the game underground even more.

Those codes also promote their game much better than rugby does in Australia, you are trying to compete with over a 100 years of tradition and loyalty to those NRL and AFL clubs and mimic what they have.
It would crush Rugby in Australia.

It can not work for the exact Reasons you have mentioned. The premier in Qld is telling us 6 more months of isolation.

All the stories about the resumption of SR or the RC have come out of Australia. And surprise, surprise, they are saying the competitions should be based there.

Marinos confirmed that NZ Rugby and the rest of the Sanzaar governing bodies will have the rest of the year to sort out their respective Super Rugby competitions.

"If you start getting towards the back end of September/October and we still haven't had a resumption of rugby, I think logic would say that's when we would consider [cancelling the season]," Marinos told Newshub.

"We have a calendar that can now go up until the end of December and our players are now on an extended period of rest, so we have until the end of 2020 to configure something.

"I wouldn't want to be definitive as to when there is a point of no return. We have to work with the confines that we have and, at the moment, that looks like between May and December 31, to put a competition structure together and get a competition under our belts."

So we maybe looking at at a domestic home and away Super Comp with the possibility of no AB's involved due to a RC to be played at the same time.

It would make for an interesting SR with each franchise potentially losing the following players, a different look to the squads if it eventuates.

    Squads may lose the following

    HIGHLANDERS
    L Coltman,A Smith,S Frizell,

    CRUSADERS
    C Taylor,J Moody,S Barrett,R Mo'unga,J Goodhue,B Ennor,S Reece,G Bridge. maybe D Havilli

    HURRICANES

    D Coles,I Walker-Lawere,A Savea,TJ Perenera,N Laumape,J Barrett. Maybe A Aumua

    CHIEFS

    N Laulula,A Ta'avo,A Moli,L Jacobsen,S Cane,B Weber,A Lienart-Brown,D McKenzie. maybe L Boshier

    BLUES

    O Tuungafasi,K Tu'inukuafe,P Tuipulotu,A Ioane,or H Sotutu,D Papalelli,B Barrett,R Ioane

Maybe squads will have to contract some more players short term.

No ABs would certainly level the playing field amongst the NZ teams. More interesting, WTF are the Jags going to do, in this situation???? But other points around this, will the Boks pick overseas players, like the lead upto RWC - it may will be outside the official windows so they won't be able too, but if they can it will effect their teams a little less. Ozzie's lack of depth will be really exposed, and the Moondogs will not even notice. If they are still around, would surprise me if they;ve already closed their doors quietly

how desperate for sport are we that any one feels even remotely excited about watching Super Rugby teams run around without ABs in them?

Fuck that, if i want to support a team with no ABs, i would prefer they are wearing Blue and Gold hoops

I'll take rugby of any sort, at least it means I could walk down to the local club and have a few beers watching grade footy.

I think that unless there's a remarkable volte-face by politicians either side of the ditch at the end of the month, SR is done for the year.

Nah Super Rugby with All Blacks or nothing for me, we may aswell play an earlier Provincial comp if that's the case.

Tbh I wouldn't mind scrapping the Rugby Championship this year if it means we get to see a NZ Super comp with big crowds.

These games will likely be played in empty stadiums so it would just be a TV product to satisfy the broadcasters and get that revenue.

Play the RC at the end of the year, if possible. I'd prefer a full NPC competition with ABs too as that would maximise the number of players who could be involved. But I think NZR is reluctant to do that because they've put all their eggs into the SR basket.

That's the revenue generating machine I think, by comparison to NPC

Yes it is, as that's the way NZR has designed domestic rugby. SR has the higher quality of players, and all the ABs. NPC has none of the latter group. It would be interesting to see how an NPC rated this year with all the ABs playing.

But the majority of SR revenue comes from the SA broadcasting rights. NZ and Aust are so reliant on SA being involved.
