Australia has lost its fucking mind. NT has decided it's no longer part of the federation by closing its borders and police are threatening to arrest people for not practising social distancing on beaches.
These are defacto War Measures, and in a civil emergency — which is what this is — I’m okay with a little enforced “Civil Coordination” of a crowd that Darwin might have used as text book example of natural selection.
There is a contagion changing the behaviour of the planet and putting a lot of us out of work.
I can take 3-6 weeks without an income. What I have no patience for are people who want us to get sick and bleed financially for the next 18 months. This virus requires coordinated action NOW!
@Tim posted an article previously by John P.A. Ioannidis pointing out we're making wide ranging and far impacting decisions without good, robust evidence. Social distancing flattens the curve and would require these behaviours for a much longer period of time than you envisage impacting our economy. This isn't a stay home for a few weeks playbook.
I also don't accept your analogies.

Man Italy showing no signs of slowing down.
Can't seem to see confirmation of any new cases here, looks like a further 2?

I don't know what the hell they are doing there. The article BSG posted on the other covid 19 thread says the numbers suggest that community spread by casual contact was much lower than close quarters contact. I don't think they are doing much of what they should be. Do they not believe in hand washing or are they all still drinking from the same cup at communion?

Or the intergenerational living arrangements and population density a big contributor? And smoker numbers.
Who knows?

All of the above. Either way they need to flatten the curve asap

Have you guys ever been to an Italian hospital? I spent a day in one in Sicily - it may not have been representative, but fck me it was disgusting. I assume they have massive shortages of staff and equipment to go with it

The public are not following advice to stay at home. I was told that the Italian government asked a Telco to track their mobile phones and 40% of the population was regularly on the move. This will be mostly the younger generation who will then have contact with their family/grandparents and you know the rest...

No, sounds like a good place to avoid!

Just got back from a shopping expedition. Bunnings was full like normal. But some people were wearing masks and muttering to themselves about personal space, while others were making sideways glances at them with slight smirks on their faces. Big shout out to the blonde with great fake boobs wearing a wrap around dress who kept leaning over to inspect flowers across from me. Made my day.
Supermarket - half the car park was empty which is astonishing for a Sunday. This place has a Coles and Woolies. Shelves slowly becoming stocked again, but no TP.

In my experience from visiting the tourist traps and landmarks of Europe, the only thing more ignorant and entitled than a coach load of Italian teenagers is a coach load of Spanish ones. I’m unsurprised they do whatever they want.
