Looks like the panic has now extended to the markets.
It will be a great time to buy soon
I made this exact point to a friend an hour ago.
Just got to pick that bottom!
Buy in tranches on the dips.
Be brave and catch the falling knife.

Not a great time to go on strike
Great time to go on strike. Perfect time probably. Just not great for rest of us
Well they live in society as well, so not in their best interests either.
Might have to pull a China and make the strike illegal temporarily
You could possibly call it a state of civil emergency? That may prevent them, but not entirely sure on that.
Force them to go to work. Even if they maintain that they're ill. And then hit them with cattle prods if their productivity isn't what you'd like.
Seriously consider sacking some as well.
Can't do that in lil ole NZ if a union decides to strike.
Can if you change the law under emergency powers
In my mind that would be too extreme a thing to do.
An absurd thing to do. It's one thing to pay people a retainer for their services and expect they perform when when required, another altogether to arbitrarily decide that people who normally provide services can't withdraw their labour.
Of course you shouldnt be allowed to arbitrarily withdraw labour without consequence. You go try it and see how it pans our for you.
It is a very bad look to use the coronavirus as leverage try to improve their lot
Of course it is - public perception in this day and age is focused on itself. But if you want to demonstrate your worth, what better opportunity to point out the benefit your provide? If your demands aren't considered reasonable, or you're easily replaceable, then your employer may just accept you removing your labor on a permanent basis.

Italy has just extended the northern lockdown to cover the entire country. Interesting times.
The Italian government have badly mismanaged the situation. They closed schools which meant all the kids did what they do over there - go to the shopping malls and cinemas.

I see they've now decreed that all people in Italy have to 'demonstrate a need to work, provide health conditions or give other limited reasons to travel outside the areas where they live.'
Greece tried the same thing, until they realised none of them work anyway.

I have a staff member travelling through Italy on a Contiki tour. I wonder if they will be allowed now
they probably already caught everything they are going to...

Probably too late now. There is a large number of people in Italy who live and work in the north but are originally from the south of the country. Once the panic started some would have left Lombardy via train and headed back home, as they usually do for the holidays. If any of those people had the virus but were asymptomatic, they potentially could have infected relatives/friends in others regions.

At current growth rate Spain/France & Germany will be in the same boat in a week. UK & parts of the US a week after.
I wonder how this is going to be policed with tourists? My brother really has picked a bad time for his euro honeymoon.

After some heavy in depth analysis, listening the experts, scientists and facebook.. I have decided
I have no fucking idea what to think. Like none at all. I swing between just saying fuck it, lets just lift all bans and let it play out and get back to normal faster as the disease doesnt seem that bad, to lets lock everyone down it s gonna be a disaster.
I have now settled on... having no idea what to think about it. I have found myself agreeing with posts that contradict each other....
I do know I hate the media though.
And anyone who hoardes toilet paper should be stripped of the right to vote or drive a car.

That will get the bad drivers off the road!

Might not be the 2nd oldest if they donβt deal with it so well...
I heard someone argue for them to do (relatively) nothing to slow it down as if they lose a few thousands or tens of thousands of 70plusers then healthcare, social security etc costs come down while any of their wealth gets shifted down to the younger inheritants.

We now have a ban on all Aircraft travel whether internal or abroad. I'm interested in what other large NZ based companies are doing.

the wife's firm has now banned all "non essential" travel, which included her trip this weekend.
I know of a large engineering firm that has banned all travel worldwide.
here in the tourism industry, we are of the opinion you should all come to the tropical North Queensland. and spend money.

Authorities just aren't very good at explaining things really, are they?
As far as I can tell this is really a case of trying to slow down the spread so we aren't having to deal with numbers that overwhelm. Simple as that.
It isn't really that the virus is super deadly just that if we let it spread it will affect many more people than the system can cope with and will escalate. Obviously the more it escalates the more numbers make up the small % that die.
I think that the NZ approach is well focussed on measures to stop escalation beyond coping capacity. What we now need is for that message to get across and for people to do their part rather than concentrate on stockpiling. -

Come to NQ - the Coronavirus won't have a chance if the crocs, stonefish, jellyfish, taipans and redbacks get you first

Wife is currently in Japan and says the discounting is enormous, particularly in hotels. It will have to be given the dollar is falling through the floor. Market bounce based on Wall St:

How good would it be if you were one of the first diagnosed and recovered. Best time to go on a bit of a world tour taking up the cheap flights and hotels knowing you are likely immune from further infection.
