I like Phillips over Blundell in the shorter formats. He's a whippet in the field, can be devastating with the bat, bats up and down the order, gives you someone in the top five who can add a couple of overs and of course he covers the 'keeping duties (as does Blundell of course). In the back of my mind though is that Blundell has made every post a winner in test cricket, hit an unofficial ODI ton last year and probably doesn't fear the Aussies. Phillips' test debut 50 on the other hand was very fortuitous in that he had several let-offs, but it was at the SCG where two of the games will be played.
It's all ifs and buts, but Blundell was one of our few batsmen with recent runs on the board going into the CWC. I can recall suggesting they should play him. The way he's performed since he got his chance, I reckon they would now.
It's one of the drawbacks of our conservative selection policy (which overall I strongly support) - we'll usually be late in getting new guns (like him and Jamieson) into the team.
I have Phillips sort of grouped with Munro and Seifert - a decent option for T20s where you have to go fast from ball 1, but I'm less convinced in longer formats.

Kylo has jumped Ferg and Henry IMHO. He is the unicorn, unique point of difference compared to the others. And he's shown an ability to bat that rivals most of the middle order

@canefan Possibly Matt Henry, but I think Lockie has his own point of difference and was statistically our best bowler at CWC. Something like:
Guppy, Nicholls, Kane, Rossco, Latham, Neesham, CdG, Jamieson, Santner, Ferguson, Boult.
Ferg has a stronger claim, I'd definitely consider him over Timmy

Bowling on Aussie pitches will be a new experience for Jamieson so I wouldn't be expecting miracles just yet. Ferguson has to play. I bet Timmy does too.

He's earned a shot. I hope they give him a go. His bounce will be prodigious on their pitches

Boult, Santner, Neesham and Ferg are locked in. That means Southee, Henry, Jamieson and Sodhi battle it out for the last spot. If its a quick they probably have to be comfortable opening the bowling which might be a mark against Jamieson given his relative inexperience. Henry looked to have gone past Southee in the world cup, but Southee was good in the ODIs vs India. I don't think he has it overseas anymore though, especially not on faster aussie tracks where he can be a bit pedestrian. If they're confident that Jamieson can be effective opening the bowling vs Finch, Warner et al then I think he'll get named for the first ODI, otherwise I think Henry will get the start.

Yeah, I've seen too many quicks get pummeled in oz. The old WACA demonstrated this time and again. Also those Aussie batsmen deal with bounce so much easier than sideways movement. Won't be expecting miracles from KJ over there either.

I've got our three quicks as Boult, Henry and Ferg. They were the reason we did so well at the CWC, I'd be loathe to cast any of them aside now. Jamieson is really battling Ferg for the 1st change spot - Ferg is a proven performer with a great record, I'd prefer he starts the first game.

What's Henry's record in Australia? I'm normally a fan, but watching him bowl over there over the holidays put me off him, in those conditions.

FergusonAnd in all seriousness I'd probably open the bowling with CDG and Boult in this team. My biggest worry is whether the SCG is what it used to be in terms of assisting the slow bowlers. But I think the selectors think it is, or why take two spinners for three games with two at the same venue, given Santner is an absolute lock-down in the shorter formats. So if you're picking two spinners but want three specialist pace bowlers you either need to ditch a batsman (Latham goes, everyone moves up a slot and another seamer comes in) or ditch Neesh or CDG.

@shark I'm not really expecting them to play two spinners.
I think in a squad of 15 they can afford a spare spinner (as well as a spare seamer, allrounder and keeper/batsman - e.g. Sodhi, Southee, Jamieson and Blundell).
Fair bit of flexibility in the squad and a bit of a stretch to say Jamieson could play as an allrounder - but, if Neesham or CdG was injured he'd doubtless be considered (assuming he's not immediately in as a seamer). (My example has Matt Henry replacing Sodhi in your team).

@Chris-B You make it sound like a lengthy tour. It's three games in a week, 3.5 hours away (add a couple of hours to Hobart I guess). Makes sense to have a balance in your 'spares', for sure, but one batsman covering five and five specialist steamers covering three spots is sensible. Sodhi providing cover for Santner though? Doesn't ring as true for mine.
