AFLW is fucking awful and no matter how much they try and force it on us like it's a legit pro sport, it's not, it's rubbish.

Based on the standard of play, there are 13 year old who should be professionals too.

My opinion , Aussie rules is a sport that is great to watch when the skills are elite ,
When you drop down the lower grades , it’s pretty ordinary , that also applies to AFLW where the skills aren’t that good ,
As a comparison I prefer women’s rugby and women’s league , just seems to work better .
-
The biggest contributor to the problem is the lack of catching ability. I see it in "park footballers" too. They keep dropping it and lose all continuity so the game becomes a recurrent scramble on the ground.
You can see why they want to keep the likes of Hannah Mouncey out. Be setting unbreakable records.
-
The major factor of televised women's professional sports is that the available market isnt the entrenched sport watcher. If it was about the sporting contest, skills and abilities then we'd get more "value" watching 16 year old male cricket, AFL, rugby etc.
Do people actually only watch because of a sense of " charity" or vituosity ? It's not because of the sporting excellence.
Not a popular opinion, no doubt, but apart from men between wanks, what draws people to watch female pro team sports? The women crowdsdon't even attend these games let alone pay for them on television.
-
When played well I find women's team sport to be very watchable - particularly netball and rugby sevens.
Women's rugby sevens is a more strategic game, much like women's tennis. The players are less powerful but I find the skill level (especially in the finals) is still very high.

i like top level women's soccer for the same reason.

I think the basics of rugby , catch pass tackle are easier to master in the lower grades and women’s games , the skills and athleticism obviously increases at the higher level which makes it better , but the lower standard stuff is more watchable because they do the basics better.
In Aussie rules kicking accurately to someone some distance away is not an easy thing to do . In the lower grade and women’s games there is a lot more throw it on to the boot and hope for the best .

This is the same reason I find it really difficult to watch a game of AFL in wet conditions. Just a reoccurring scramble.

I'm sure @mariner4life will be delighted that Fox Sport appears to have made ch507 a channel dedicated to second rate sport calling it FOXW.
And they're dumping rugby.
Great business move ...
-
I find women's T20 cricket and 7s quite good to watch. Can't watch women's XVs because the kicking - off the boot and for goal - infuriates me and exemplifies why it's vastly inferior to watching their male counterparts. And with the likes of the girl's BBL and international T20, the ladies must be getting more powerful or something because there are bigger scores being made which improves the spectacle.
-
Oh and meanwhile, my formerly renewed enthusiasm for the Dees has waned after last season's pitiful effort. Hopes were high but were cruelly dashed within the first half dozen rounds and it's been tough to get over. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll be good to go again.
-
game one plays in an empty MCG. It wasn't a great spectacle. Richmond of course wins because they are playing Carlton
I can't see how the comp continues
-
I flicked over thinking I might watch it but it was already something like 69-23! At least Richmond closed the gap a little
I was confused which team came out of the sheds at halftime. Carlton are better than recent seasons tough - they'll win a few games with the odd upset.
But like everyone else, if this season continues into another couple of rounds I'll be surprised.
-
I just enjoyed the brief respite from the world. No crowd was weird, but I don't think it killed the spectacle completely.
Richmond are a good side. Carlton are not, but probably better than previous years. To close within three goals in the final quarter without their main goalkickers was commendable.

i didn't see much that wasn't different to every other year. Dogshit preseason, out of the game early v Richmond R1, then come back a bit to make the game a bit more respectable. Hope springs eternal.
If they aren't better than they have been, then you may as well burn the joint down, because they are coming off a fucking low base.

What is it about AFL that excites you guys? Because I can't stand the game. Everyone admits it's crap on TV, but I've been to 5 live games (not many I'll admit) including a sold out MCG, but it's not much better for me.
What are the things you love about it? I can appreciate a great climbing mark, or a long kick for goal. But everything in between is so ugly to watch. The scrappyness, the randomness, the constant chipping between full forward and defenders, presumably because they're both so bored. It's just a really ugly game, made worse by playing it for 4 bloody 30min quarters!!!
What am I missing???
