Interesting looking at some of the history of NZ teams in this tournament.
Our best finish was in 1998 when we were losing finalists to England. That team produced 4 players were fairly regular blackcaps over the next decade; Franklin, Mills, Vincent, H Marshall. (plus 3 fringe blackcaps; J Marshall, B Martin, P McGlashen in a format or 2)
At the time; Franklin was a bit of youth star in NZ. Not sure if he had played senior cricket though at that time.
Our best team was 2008, losing semi final to a very strong India who were eventual champions. That team produced 3 NZ superstars; Williamson, Southee, Boult, and another regular blackcap in Corey Anderson. Doug Bracewell also in that squad but was very young and a minor contributor.
At youth level at the time; Williamson, Anderson and Southee were already massive, while Boult was more the anorak's spotter'badge choice
Also had a very good team in 2010, at home, lost in quarter-final to Australia, Disappointing on paper but strong Aus team with Hazlewood. That team had Latham, Neesham, Anderson and D Bracewell as products to feature regularly over next decade.
That team had a strong youth fast bowling attack of Small, Wheeler, Bracewell. But the notable thing was the bowlers who didn't make it from that mini-generation; Henry, Milne, Fergusson, Kuggeleijn. I think Milne made his blackaps debut a few months later.

No, Looking at the archive he actually had a good national U19 tournament.
Then made the CD team late in the season after some good Hawke Cup games for Manawatu.
Rather than "a few months later" as i said - It wasn't actually until early the next season, after a Champions League T20 tournament, that he made the Blackcaps (in the Hadlee/Turner days of throwing young kids in and seeing if they float).

Fox Sports had a thing on the 2010 Australian team today, a "where are they now".
Hazlewood is the obvious stand out, NTA's mate Mitch Marsh was the captain, Adam Zampa plays limited overs stuff (of how i hate Adam Zampa) the rest have done 3/5s of fuck all.

I think that team could have had Pattinson already a state player but injured, and Cummins already a test player but injured.
I think about 3 to 4 players 'making it' per 2 year squad is about normal.

I've just watched the 1 h highlights of the NZ-WI game. Our top order got dismissed mistiming pull shots and then the middle order got strangled by the WI spinners. Most batsmen made some contribution until Field and Clarke sealed the deal. Ashok was expensive bowling but took 3 very good catches.

@Siam we're due
-
@Chris-B saw this too late! Anyway, Afghans were a typical Afghan team - strong on spin, weak on batting. They actually punched above their weight with the bat I think.
I hope NZ gets past the Bangla toygers and makes it to the final against India - The toygers will be too easy for India to swat aside.
-
@Siam Toygers are usually strong at the u19 level, thanks to some questionable ages, choking spin bowlers, and some focused investment by their board to provide their u19 boys with games and exposure. Shame they don't apply the same level of focus and investment on their FC cricket, but that's that.
Unless NZ has a top order collapse against them, I think they are on their way to the final.

Bangladesh would be raging hot favourites v NZ.
Beat NZ 4-1 in September (in NZ).
NZ did, though, win the 15-a-side warm up game in South Africa between the 2 teams about a fortnight ago.
We probably play a lot more rugby earlier than they do though
-
Bangladesh, unbeaten in the tournament, win the toss and bowl on a greenish wicket, and a cloudy day.
Rain forecast for about the 40th over of the chase, and with thunderstorms yesterday, it's noteworthy that Bangles go through on a non result. Perhaps that means no Duckworth?Bangles open with an off spinner and we're 1 for 5 after 10 balls. Little black caps😁

NZ were well beaten.
Looking at the scoreboard, none of the top order made a significant score so they only got a sub-par total. That seems to have been a constant in this WC as the wins have been due to some batting heroics from the bowlers.
Most of NZ history, sadly.

That Bangle team was really good. Looked well coached and some neat fielding placements. Looked a bit like boys playing older boys. Lots of histrionics but I guess that goes with being young and mimicking the pros. Was put off by the ridiculous appealing including an obvious, like really obvious bump ball appeal that had to go upstairs. It's funny, umpires get all sorts of criticism around technology which is, by and large, out of human control, yet authorities turn a blind eye to screaming, repetitive appealing which is easily controllable. I'm cool with getting excited and being passionate but repeatedly screaming " howzat, howzat, howzat!!" is a ploy to force an umpire's hand - every cricketer knows that.
Anyway, a fine team of cricketers from Bangladesh, coached by Paul Wiseman I think🤔

Wiki says the coach is Naveed Nawaz
A shame, you got me excited about a potential replacement for Stead!!!
