Why would you give Southee the ball in that situation? He has failed over and over under pressure in situations like that🤦‍♂️

Well, that was seizing defeat from the jaws of victory.

A bit of the Ilford 2nd XI about it!

Kane was absolutely sublime. Like on another level to every other player on the park. A match winning performance 10 times out of 10.

The rest of the team managed to pull out a choke for the ages. They should be embarrassed to lose that given Kane's performance.

Still can’t believe the choke on the last over of the game proper.

After that 6 was hit it couldn’t have been much easier.

    Choke of epic proportions

It shouldn't have even gone to a super over. Kane and/or Ross should have won it after doing all the hard work.

So close to the pinnacle of the hundred in a losing effort

That was worse than club standard keeping. I get we want a keeper that can bat, but for f*ck they still need to be able to keep up to club level.

I think actual keeping ability sometimes gets forgotten in these keeping all-rounder discussions, but he also basically failed with the bat, so we didn't get anything out of him.

Didn't they win? At least one game?

The Black Caps super over is the All Blacks drop goal of those tournaments that never happened.

I think we need to start including super overs in training. This level of choke is just embarrassing.

I am sure this was mentioned during a recent tour that didn't happen, but what is 2m Peter adding to the batting? Some of the top order have regressed since he replaced McMillan.

The ability to score at less than a run a ball.
The record of being the most consistently poor batting side to tour Australia in 139 years.(https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/sport/2020/01/blackcaps-worst-test-side-to-tour-australia-in-139-years.html)

Stead and Fulton are increasingly the Todd Blackadder of cricket.

Made even worse that we are constantly reminded in the commentary by the people they replaced.

Yeah there have been some worrying signs about the quality of the coaching staff from day one more or less. The bigger question is what's the alternative. We really want to avoid a repeat the Andy Moles debacle.

At what point will NZC look at a change? Long after the horse has bolted I expect

I'm wondering a bit whether Hesson had a look at what was coming up and decided to bank his "legendary" coach status.

I wrote several times about how bizarrely poor our CWC preparation was, with Australia pulling all of their stars out of the IPL to play warm-up games against us, while we left our stars in India where some were still just benchwarmers. We got lucky with the CWC draw in that we were able to play "in-tournament warm-ups" vs Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. I was more annoyed about that shit-show than the preparations for Australia - but, for both, I'd suggest NZ Cricket should give themselves an uppercut.

Stead has done a few slightly unusual things that suggest he's not quite as sharp as Hesson - but, tbh, I'm not particularly distraught about Henry over Timmy. We were never winning that game and Tim hadn't torn the Aussies apart in two goes.

You'd hope the 2 metre Peter hasn't had time to wreck all our batsmen yet, so I think I'll wait until we're back to failing against bunny teams before calling for the headsman. I'm inclined to think that things would be going a bit better in this current series if we had Boult and Ferg playing.
