@mariner4life much easier for a couple of mates to have a game of B-ball or Soccer than rugby too.
TBH I dont think it is just rugby competing with B-ball, although I think most sports are having big numbers of teens dropping out, so the problem is bigger than rugby, and probably bigger than just NZ too.

I feel like one of these pop up all the time, about how rugby is about to be overtaken in NZ etc
But there are certainly some things that rugby as a sport needs to be aware of.
I'm pretty disengaged with rugby these days, which means my kids are too. They've never been to a live game. They don't watch on TV, because i watch one or two a weekend max over Super season. Then the AB tests. And then nothing for half the year.
How much does it cost to take your kids to a Super rugby game?

, my Dad would have never let me grow up not being a rugby fan. I once joined a soccer team and it nearly ripped my family apart, Dad stormed off to the pub ... luckily I was such a fatso they made me the goalie so my wendyball career lasted a week.To be serious, I think it's reasonable taking kids to Super games with the family packages that are available, certainly comparable to other activities, but I haven't taken kids to games in a while so just going by what I've been told by mates with kids.

@mariner4life these articles and the demise of rugby have been about for decades, rugby is well aware I believe and I think they are always looking at ways to address the issues...the whole no rep at u14 grades and under is one...while I dont agree with it, if it works then great.
When I was in my teens soccer always boasted they had bigger player numbers and would eventually be the premier sport in NZ...guess they playing the long game.
If there is a super game up here, maybe $40 for me and my boy? I'll let you know when Beaudy makes his debut for the Blues in Whangarei later this year...first round Robin game here in almost a decade...?

Squidge Rugby and (until they got brought on board) 1014 Rugby had vids taken down by SANZAAR/Sky too

@Machpants I used to make rugby videos and you would have to basically hide them to prevent them being taken down, which defeated the purpose.
When they sold the exclusive rights to televise, it should have come with an expiry after a certain period and a reasonable fair use provision.

I doubt rugby will suddenly cease to exist or even be adversely affected by basketball. Basketball is not for everyone. It takes a lot of subtle subroutines to hit a free throw regularly. Much easier to throw a wide ball in rugby. To be good at basketball you need to have a level of dexterity that is not necessarily something that you need to have for rugby. Not to mention height! There are always going to be athletes suited to certain sports. Just like in the US some play football, soccer, baseball, lacrosse, and basketball. If you are a large Polynesian kid that loves a bit of contact and don't have any hops I doubt very much that basketball will be your first choice sports.

Dream scenario:
Let anyone, including the official online channels, make social media clips of highlights with music etc and funky editing.
Remove the music from the live rugby experience at the stadium.
The music and crap seems to be aimed at an audience that aren't there?
My best (and only) live rugby experience last year was going to watch the wellington club finals at Petone Rec with thousands of people vocally supporting and encouraging the players. Took me back 20 years when it was actually worth your while to raise your voice at a sporting event in NZ because they could actually hear you.
(and remove the flame throwers, so my ticket is cheaper with no gas an no DJ, and I'm not unwillingly paying to waste LPG and blast unnecessary carbon into the atmosphere, whatever your thoughts on global warming, that's alienating to a sector of the paying public)

I had a 'middle aged man yells at clouds' moment the other week at a sporting event that scared a 12 year old standing in line behind me.
At the domestic T20 at the Basin with my family. Music after every boundary and every over. No point even clapping. Anyway, at the half time interval standing in line to buy hotdogs and I can't hear my 5 year old's voice over the PA noise for what she wants to order. In exasperation and frayed nerves at the constant noise I turn over my shoulder in the direction of the field and noise and yell; "Just shut the fuck up!!!"
Poor random 12 year old boy standing behind me in line jumps back in fright at this mad old grumpy man with tourettes standing in front of him.

@Rapido I went to a Mako game a couple of years ago where the incessant music annoyed the shit out of me. So I wrote to the marketing manager and complained.
In recent times it seems like there's been less of a musical assault - I even remarked on it at the final this year ("which, by the way, we won" said in a Trumpian voice).
I think there's a lot of worrying trends for rugby (and other sports) in New Zealand, and the ageing demographic is just one. This year is going to be the first year that I'm thinking the best NH club teams look stronger than the best SH Super teams.
However, I suspect life is going to become progressively more internet based. I reckon we're not too far from a point where people will start taking their vacations in virtual reality, rather than actually travelling somewhere. Probably places where you can already do that.

To the topic at hand, i am wondering what the data would have looked like 20 years ago? What were the demographics like then? Is this a new and concerning trend? Or have the majority of sports watchers always been older?
We're also in a period where sports participation levels appear to be declining (not just the junior stuff highlighted in the other thread). The culture is changing around playing organised team sport on the weekend, does this also flow through to people's engagement in watching pro-sports? When i played, i lived and breathed rugby for 10 months of the year. Training, playing, and watching. When the first two went, the 3rd quickly followed.
People are increasingly time poor, because we have allowed the system to warp our priorities, and we find new ways to impose commitments on ourselves (i want my kids to be 100% fulfilled so I'll enrole them in everything). So reduced down time combined with a boom in entertainment options is definitely going to effect traditional entertainment options.

@Chris-B I don't know what it says about me but while I know what it means to punch out a cone, I have no idea what fortnite is. I mean I do from context etc but I have no desire to bother to learn the detail.
As @mariner4life says I don't have enough time to do the things I'd actually physically want to do without "wasting" time in some alternative reality.
VR tourism will come - already has in a limited sense (galleries etc) but the real deal is VR porn. If I was tech savvy and looking at a start-up that's where my money would go.

I was struck about a decade ago when one of my friends (whose kids were gaming addicts) observed that he could see why they'd spend all their time playing computer games - because life in the games was more exciting and better than life outside.
You're right about VR porn - but, that will be part of M4L's "online Rome vacation". Monica Bellucci really will appear in his Roman driveway. Instead of traipsing around a bunch of churches in the heat everything will be tailored to a perfect experience. His wife probably won't be too happy about paying for the 14 day Monica plug-in though!
