I'm torn, on the one hand we've almost all done something stupid and possibly illegal while young and drunk. I don't think from the description of events that it was premeditated or something he would ever put himself in the position to do again.But if guys keep getting off for drunken violence then young players will think that they have a free pass if they are talented enough.

@Siam I think - if they decide to terminate his contract - that they don't do that to punish him, but because he might not be able to travel to other countries for away games. He may not be able to enter Australia, Argentina, South Africa and Japan with a conviction?

Keep getting off? It's a first offence isn't it?
I certainly can see why people get so up in arms about rugby players being able to continue their "privileged" lifestyle after convictions etc - one rule for them, one rule for us etc etc.
But isn't it better to have a young recently convicted fellow in a supportive environment, making money to support himself / family than out there with no job, no prospects etc?
I thought Sevu Reece was handled perfectly.

I mean multiple guys, the similar situation in Wellington a few years back, Reece and now this. Probably a lot more I'm forgetting.I agree the Reece situation was probably handled correctly by the way. But drunken violence can easily cross a line, one punch can kill. Would much rather kids are acutely aware of that fact - serious consequences for people who dance on that line could help bring attention to that.

Punishing this guy further by tearing up his contract and hoping this will 'send a message' is not going to work. Drunk people do not think of consequences. Ever tried talking down a drunk when they are on a self righteous or violent crusade? Virtually impossible. Consequences are the last thing they can comprehend.

It's a no win situation really.
Tear up his contract and you leave him high and dry, potentially spiralling further with no direction, more so if he loses his teaching too.
But by the same token, that's pretty nasty, even drunk to stomp on someone, and for him to continue his life with minimal consequences ($8k fine) and the Highlanders are able to get him travel visas, it paints a poor picture about our justice system allegedly favouring rugby players (even though I'd expect there will be plenty of examples of similar punishment for non-rugby players, they just dont make national media)
But as @Stargazer mentions above it will likely be the impact the conviction has on his travel that may ultimately sway the Highlanders.

@taniwharugby interesting how this one compares with Rene Ranger, who got off for assault after punching some one unconscious.
My point being the "court of public opinion" and media headlines are shitty ways of determining someone's future.
All these things are far too complex ( and commonplace) to simply cast such a life altering judgement from afar.

@Siam he was found not guilty, plead not guilty, so isn't really thecsame as someone who plead guilty and found guilty...plus other aspects to that case make it different
In the world today, public opinion carries alot of sway unfortunately, people are influenced by what they read/see/hear, some people still believe what they read in the media as fact as opposed to opinion.

@taniwharugby i hear you but actually the two assaults are more similar than they are different and we agree that the matter starts and ends in the judicial system.
Funny and annoying how media headlines and clickbait are automatically assumed to reflect the "opinion of the public". Not having a go but it's time to refute the notion that the actual cognizant public agree wholeheartedly with shit stirring journos working in an industry with a destructive and dishonest revenue model.

@Siam well the similarities are someone was assaulted and the alleged perpetrators were rugby players.
But I know there was more to the RR one than the media reported, which was largely painted by a guy who claimed he was beat up by a professional rugby player and he should pay.

This guy will go before the Education Council and probably keep his job as a teacher but his NZR contract should be torn up. Reece was handled well, but he shouldn't have been chucked straight into the AB's.

It might be that those young ones are the ones out at the pub dealing with drunks who are prepared to stomp you if they get on top in a fight?
My visa here is dependent on me maintaining a level of conduct that is pretty easy to meet. I’ve been in scrapes a few times (strangely always with non-Japanese) but have always had the bell in the back of my mind reminding me to never push too far** - it’s better to take a beating than not be able to show up to work and never be able to return.
** given that I’m almost literally the worst fighter in the world, this is also a pretty easy standard to meet

Yes yes. Catastrophize the behaviour to it's most emotive and then state that anyone exhibiting this behaviour is beneath you and chuck in a completely absurd and irrevelant " comparison" from completely different circumstances, then stand there with your arms folded and a stern facial expression proving there is no other course of action but to punish more than the courts.
Mumble something about messages to the wider community and soak in the dopamine of being righteous and a saviour of society.
Extinguishing Selby-Rickett's job prospects will undoubtedly lower all the incidences of injuring with reckless disregard starting the day he's banned and we'll all live happily ever after...
Why punish him further than the courts for "injuring with reckless disregard" ?
To teach him a lesson already learned? To teach others the same lesson? Why?

Instead of denigrating other opinions may I suggest an alternative to cancel culture NZRU may embark upon:
Nurture him through any counselling deemed appropriate, at his expense and get him out to schools and orgs to speak to and mentor adolescent boys about bravado, temper, choices and the consequences. Teach him to set up and run these groups. Remind him of the chances afforded to him and go and spread the message to the " deplorables". Give the kids someone real to learn from ( McCaw and Read are role models to no one outside middle class functional families). Market it to appease your sjw potential market and the optics. Give him a genuine chance to be a role model to the many aggressive and non catered for teen boys in society.
Reprehensible that ed. Dept threaten his teacher status. Provided there's no recidivism and genuine contrition, ( comes from an achieving family afterall) then the thought of him teaching young men about violence and consequences is highly appealing. Much more productive than the shallow messages from a Marxist feminist.
I hate cancel culture and the way it's selectively applied to enhance a news week. The courts must be the final arbiter otherwise it's all individually subjective. None of us are consistent with our application of what's acceptable behaviour and punishment for every situation

@Steven-Harris I just don't think it's wise to promote a player, who has just been convicted of assault and with a misconduct procedure still being conducted.
