Overhearing members of our work social club discussing the moral issues about running a Melbourne Cup event.
I give up.
and those moral issues are?
broken leg something something dog food I guess?
i was hoping, just maybe, the conversation had moved on from that.
2 miles is a fucking long horse race, maybe that's a conversation that can be held. Not a viewpoint i would really agree with, but at least it's a conversation.
It's not like we force sprinters to take part - it's a weight for age stayers event.
If people feel getting dressed up and pissing it on is in poor taste, then they don't have to. Leaves more booze for the rest of us.
look, you know you are preaching to the converted. And the people that are likely to hate on the Melbourne Cup, hate on the entire concept, it's just that they forget it exists for 51 weeks of the year.
Your social media will light up Monday and Tuesday from "passionate" anti horse racing people posting memes that are full of absolute shit, but will be breathlessly endorsed as "true fact".
I expect to be heckled by ferals as i enter Flemington on Saturday. Twas ever thus.
By Wednesday lunchtime it is but a memory

They were outside Trentham (3 of them) making noise and I didn't see anyone react or acknowledge them.

no one ever does. it's a fucking pointless exercise, but hey, knock yourselves out if that's your idea of fun on a Saturday.

We should organise a TSF day at the races.
Caught up with @Smudge at Trentham and it was a good ole day having a few quiets and a punt.
With the summer racing coming up, it could be a perfect opportunity.Perhaps better if we have something racing but not a priority.

Depending on location, I may be a starter.
Had another pacer qualifier yesterday and she did it easily. By contrast, Spur To Action is off to the broodmare paddock after looking disinterested on Sunday.

Sir Charles Road running tomorrow in Lexus Hotham, last chance to get into the Melbourne Cup. Last start third owners upset by jockey who missed chance to get out early and get a clear run. Will be thereabouts. Currently just under $4 a place, not a bad e/w

Any aussie-based ferners going to Oaks Day? I'll be there for the annual pilgrimage (in the carpark). Bizarre card, 1st race isn't until 1:50pm this year.
All tips welcome!!!
won't be there this year, but an aussie Ferners punting day could be fun..

Dear lord, I made some nice wagers today at the Breeders Cup at Santa Anita — the 2-day event is America’s “SuperBowl” of horse racing — but sadly, just minutes ago, missed on the last BC race of the 1st day. This one was for the Breeders Cup Juvenile (2yos) American championship.
The top three placings paid out at 45/1, 25/1 and 35/1 respectively.
$2 Exacta paid $976.40.
The 0.60 cent trifecta paid $2,193.93.
20 cent superfecta (first 4 horses) paid $2,263.57
The 60-cent Hi-5 (top 5 horses) paid $32,140.02.
And here’s the kicker — it was an 8-horse field, ffs!!!!

Melody Belle goes into the G1 Empire Rose at Flemington today riding a three-straight G1 victory streak at Hastings, with Opie aboard, opens morning fave at 3-1. Has won last six G1s it entered. Is that opening odd too short, too high, or is this a slam-dunk?
-
Wet today here in Melbourne. Stupid Victoria

Well I guess that answers my question about Melody Belle, then.
Will be lucky to get her 2/5 by post-time.
-
Just a great, great win for Melody Belle.
-
Comms just mention Melody Belle has won more G1s than any other horse in the world this year.
Awesome.
Opie had her well back at the turn, came around them all and exploded home.
-
I didn’t think I was going to get anything on Melody Belle alone (8/5) so played a $2 Exacta with her on top and six others in the two-hole, total wager $24, won me $100.90.
(I should have played the exact same numbers in the 20-cent superfecta though; those combinations would have cost me $24 bet and it paid — wait for it — $2,414.11. Even when I get it right I shit the bed on these fucking wagers. Regardless, thank you Melody Belle for winning me some money tonight!!)

Kiwi-bred Kolding takes the inaugural $5.8-million dollar Golden Eagle at Rosehill in a thrilling finish. Took him on top in another small $2 Exacta with him on top and Brutal and Sunlight underneath, won it on the latter. [Update:] $227.40. It always feels good making money backing a Kiwi.
