I'm optimistic about next season - Gatland on board should be a massive boost and our props , loose forwards and 9s are looking strong. Just need a decent 10 and pray our outside backs get into some form.

"My return to playing is about the end of January, when Super Rugby starts. I'll do a pre-season with the Chiefs, and then hopefully round one I'll be ready to go."

"Then there is Quinn Tupaea, one of the region's most exciting prospects who lit up the game every time he took the ball, on top of being a solid defender.

A debut Super Rugby season in 2020 with the Chiefs is ahead for Tupaea"

Might not be official or anything, but maybe someone knows something. Obvs I will be stoked if it's true.

Tupaea signed for the Chiefs last year. Maybe that was on a development contract but he told me he wasn't allowed to play for the Chiefs this year because of his age.

Not a very accurate article either, as Burr didn't even play in the latter games as Finau and Parker were favoured, and Stratton is meant to be going to Japan. I hope Tucker is back in the mix for the Chiefs. He deserves it.

@Bovidae Yeah Tupaea played preseason vs the Reds and I saw some photos of him training with the Chiefs on Instagram. Still, seeing anything about Tupaea for the Chiefs gets me hyped for next season.

@Yeetyaah Not much news about potential Chiefs signings but obviously they have some spots to fill at prop, lock (especially), halfback, 1st 5 and the outside backs. Maybe also the midfield depending on Manu's plans.

@Bovidae I feel like Manu will leave, the Blues will have a place for him. Chiefs will have ALB, Nankivell, Tupaea, Sullivan, and Wainui. Sullivan and Wainui are used as wingers but their natural position I would argue is centre, especially Wainui. Nankivell, ALB and Tupaea can play 12 & 13. Manu will most likely head north.

Lock I expect Tucker to be picked up. McWhannell will most likely be re-signed.

For props, I liked the look of Ollie Norris. Iosefa-Scott looked good too, but I doubt the Higlanders will let him go.

1st five is a hard one. Cruden if he's back would be cool. If not, I'd expect Falcon to step into a full time 10 role. Maybe pick up Trask or Reihana for development as well. I noticed Counties using Leger at 10 more this season, not that he did well, but he played 10 for the Chiefs last year so I'm unsure. Fuck Debreczeni for leaving after one year.

I'm comfortable with the depth in the midfield for the reasons you say. ALB and Nankivell will probably be the starters with the likes of Tupaea as backup. Wainui has issues on defence at centre, and that was likely one of the reasons the Crusaders let him go. Still young though. No Nanai-Seturo so he might end up on the wing with Alaimalo/Stevenson.

Lock I expect Tucker to be picked up. McWhannell will most likely be re-signed.

I think so too. Ardron more likely to be used as a lock than no.8. I'd like a tall lock (e.g., Parkinson).

For props, I liked the look of Ollie Norris. Iosefa-Scott looked good too, but I doubt the Higlanders will let him go.

Too early for Norris. The Chiefs have more depth at prop than any of the NZ teams with Moli, Laulala and Ta'avao as well as Ross. They will need another 2 props. Kautai was the 3rd TH this year and O'Neill was in the squad but injured like Hames. I would expect both Johnstone and Iosefa-Scott to be back with the Highlanders.

I'm still saying DMac could be the 1st 5. 🙂 That means Stevenson plays at fullback and Alaimalo on the left wing.

    @Bovidae

I like those two on the wing, with Dmac at 15.

I’d like it if we picked up an experienced 10.

Didn’t I read somewhere that Wainui had played his last game for the Chiefs as is off to Japan I’m sure it was towards the end of super rugby when he was suspended

@mikey07 He is still under contract with the Chiefs for 2020. And he wasn't suspended during or at the end of the 2019 SR season.

Looks like Sosefo Kautai is heading to Japan. He's shared a bunch of farewells from his friends on his Instagram story.

He's just a kid (23). He would be the no.3 TH at the Chiefs but either Gatland didn't want him or the contract in Japan was too good to turn down.

Who would be in charge of Chiefs selection/recruitment?

A good question and one I have asked myself. Three of the Chiefs' coaching staff were involved at the RWC (Gatland, Matson and Barnes).

I can only assume that Gatland is having some input from afar and relying on the CEO, Manager and maybe Randle to be the person doing the recruiting/negotiating in NZ.

Which is a nice segue into rumoursville ... overheard former Ferner Nathan Rarere (what was his handle?) via the wonders of the interwebs saying that the Cueball will return to the Chiefs to assist Garland.

    Any confirming stories? Any thoughts?

No idea. Mitchell is a coaching mercenary who goes where the money is, and he will be getting more money in England than he could ever get in NZ as an assistant coach/defence coach.
