Manawatu vs Northland
-
so it doesnt get any easier this week, travelling to PN to face Manawatu, bolstered with Hemopo and I expect Laumape this week too.
The latter one in particular concerns me as mid-field is a real problem area for us, Hohaia can defend strongly, but positioning is poor so often he isnt where he needs to be.
Our chances of a top 4 are getting slimmer and slimmer, anything but a win this weekend is required...I expect the team goal of a home semi is all but gone now too.
I do wonder if we need to let Josh Goodhue have the rest of the season off, he has failed a number of HIAs this season, let him go away and get his head right.
While there is still hope of a top 4 finish, I think we also need to give some of our young guys a run with an eye for the future.
Happy Debreczeni has held together so far, and wonder what his long term plans are, but we need to be looking at our young guys, similarly our mid-field, big issues here on both sides of the ball.
If Hyland is back, I really think he should come into 13 to partner Tua or Gregory (Preferrably Gregory, we simply must get him involved more)
Think Levien needs to start at 9 to give Nock a hurry up, although IIRC Nock was Capt on Saturday so unlikely he will be benched unless Olsen returns?
If Matich isnt back, I'd give Byrne a shot to start, Stokes is a worker, but not sure he is right for 7, particularly as he seems to have lost a yard of pace since last season.

have heard that Goodhue is back into starting line-up, Tua to start at 12 and Hyland back at 14, think there were no other changes to starting line-up, Temo & Hohaia to bench and Roberts-Te Nana out of 23.
Lets hope this is when Tua starts to deliver on his potential, and gets to measure himself with one of the best this week...🤞
Olsen still out, so Nock retains the captaincy.

@taniwharugby Only saw the highlights but I was impressed with the physicality against HB. We need to maintain that. Obviously being on D a lot of the time and playing without the ball means our game management and discipline (mgmt of ref) needs work.
On Nock, I think the criticism is mostly fair (speed of decision making when clearing the ball, running more often). However I saw that he was addressing his decision making with the Blues (looked good by end of season) so for me our Coaches just need to pick that up and work with him. Running wise, what I see is that his work rate all over the field is much better. Good Coaches get great results and he is not far away.
Signs with Hawkes Bay that we have found a mix of players that will put their bodies on the line. Really impressed with the way the forward pack is coming along. Need to see better execution from backs.

Isi started the first 2 rounds and then is benched for the next 3
Northland don’t have many full time professionals who aren’t injured. They should be getting more out of him.yeah unsure what it is, he is a solid scrummager at this level, good with ball in hand and hits hard on defence, maybe they see him as better coming on later to make an impact, although often the game is gone by then...

I’m hoping it’s a wet miserable night in Palmy North as it’s usually famous for. That way we can try and roll them up front as I think we have parity there, if not a slight edge.
If it’s dry I think they’ll poo all over us out wide unless our backs really pull finger and front up.

@J77 hopefully they have had Hyland and Matiu running at Tua and Johnson all week.
Perfect prep!

@J77 will be interesting to see how Tua goes though, Laumape is a handful for the best players, so he us up against it from the outset.
But if he plays well it could be the making of him.
I’d be inclined to place old Hitman Matiu in that midfield channel at times on defence. Might sure things up a bit.
