@Stargazer That is mental. What the hell were they thinking? Recipe for disaster here.
Amateur hour. I'm going to watch the ABs games on FTA, haven't figured out the rest yet. Hopefully the knockout games will be on FTA as well

I'm hoping it implodes on itself and TVNZ will take over the whole thing.
Not fussed if I watch delayed AB games as the semi and final is live on TVNZ, I believe?

Kind of related, I have Kayo sport here in Oz and after some initial teething problems have come round to really liking it.
But, I have an older chromcast so I have only been watching in 720p and it seemed ok, but the last couple of matches I've watched at my mates place and he has a projector and Apple TV (so 1080p) and the picture is awesome even wall sized. Now I can't bloody watch the 720p version anymore so I'll have to buy an Apple TV or new Chromecast - as they've been promising a PS4 app that's never going to happen.
First world problems! Although, I guess I'm lucky in that I live in Oz and am one fo the few to have decent internet (although I did have a year of hell with a lying snivelling piece of tutae Telstra subsidiary).

I keep in touch with the now elderly parents of a mate of mine who passed away a couple years back, he was an only child and they don't really know anyone who is tech literate where they live so they are all sorts of screwed by things like this. Hoping for some FTA, will be a lot of older folk in that same situation. Copyright protection on a cable? So ridiculous, you think you're likely to lose money with people recording your shows? Wait until bad PR gets out of the most vulnerable folk being unable to watch something they paid for.

@Nepia Its bloody good alright. I'm currently doing it the old fashioned way via hdmi cable to my chromebook. I do have one weird issue, when I start a stream regardless of the quality settings it will only be in SD, I then need to manually change it to Auto or HD (whatever setting it isn't currently on) and it then kicks into life. Absolutely quality product a shame NZ probably doesn't have the population to support an equivalent.

It's been around for years. This isn't something Spark added

I've tried running it through my spare laptop but even on 1080p it seems to lose something in the picture - I think the movement is less fluid so I stick with the iPad and Chromecast. I'm always wary with my iPad though because it occasionally gets pushed off the network so I have to switch it's wifi on and off again (not sure why it happens and not IT/Wifi/Modem savvy enough to fix it).
I think I'll bit the bullet and get an Apple TV, after all I've already saved the cost of the Apple TV since cancelling my Foxtel.

I bought the newest generation chromecast. Seems okay
I've got an older version of a Chromecast which is restricted to 720p, if I update I'd prefer an all in one like Apple TV so that I don't need to use iPad and can sit down and flick it on with a remote.

I had this attitude until I saw the kickoff times. Perfect viewing time for nz. If it was a European based world cup I'd be ok taking your approach.

Depends how delayed the FTA screenings are

They'll turn plenty of excellent timed broadcasts into just a bit too late (plus drag of adds)

Closer to time I might end up caving in and paying for the package. I mean it's only once every 4 years right? A bit of a bitter pill on top of the monthly I pay to watch football on Spark

@canefan I umm’d and ahh’d for a while but then ended up getting it. FTA are not showing many games and I’ll be wanting to watch a lot of the games that don’t involve the ABs - Wallabies, SA, Ireland, Wales, England and even Argentina who are improving and generally do well at WCs. Heaps of very interesting matches given how even this cup is!

@No-Quarter I think I'll feel more ready to pay if the service stands up to the pressure
