Seems a bit low - wouldn't surprise me to see it increased on appeal.
With all the talk lately of hate crimes I would have thought that cretin would have had more publicity over what he did.
Why, did he misgender the victim? If he did then throw away the key.

You’d have to ask what kind of moron would let someone who looks like this live with her family but 17 months doesn’t seem like much for attacking someone with a hammer in front of their kids .

Can someone please enlighten me about the "female" in the below:
"after pleading guilty to assaulting a female"
Is that a thing? I thought assault was assault - the female part means what? Is that worse, in terms of sentencing?
Not planning on bashing any particular gender myself, but I have never heard of it.

I suppose as a male is more likely to inflict more serious harm on a female, similar to an adult to a child.

@booboo Thanks Boo, I had no idea, and that was 1961 - well before I was around and yes the damage / harm that can be done by a male is possibly relevant. Personally I think the violence is, men can be the victims as well apparently.
I wonder how that all fits in with our multi gender society now?

Women tend to get shorter sentences than men for the same crime .
I’m surprised more crims haven’t frocked up in court to get a shorter sentence and access to women who probably aren’t all that fussy .

@jegga thats an interesting point...so a transgender would have to go into thier 'new' gender prison right?
Yeah , Canada and the Uk have already had issues with troons raping women in prison . The Canadians actually put a pedophile in the minimum security part where there was women with babies.
Probably some huge compensation payments coming up for the victims.
-
@jegga another crazy scenario from the fern that will undoubtedly come to fruition one day.
We're getting good at predicting the short comings of ridiculous legislation from myopic authorities who simply have no awareness of bad faith actors in society.

Great decision to let that prick back on the streets.

"No doubt there will be letters to the editor demanding my resignation," Christchurch District Court Judge Raoul Neave said at Tuesday's sentencing. "It won't be the first time and it won't be the last."
...yep that's a pretty safe assumption. May have even been a letter to the editor demanding a "Head on a pike" had the killed pedestrian been a child.

@Bones said in NZ Judiciary:
@Rembrandt yeah at least it wasn't a child... Huh?
Outrage over the death of a homeless man will be significantly less than that of a child.

That intensive supervision that allows the authorities to monitor him is obviously top notch.

Two rapes? No jail for you if you're good at sports

@jegga That is screwed up. If he’s that bad now imagine him with the extra sense of entitlement and arrogance arising from being told by a judge how special he is. Why does his future outweigh the future he stole from those young girls?
Its fucked. And you are right too, he's only going to get worse. It reminds me of these two little shits who got a slap on the wrist because apparently they were promising rugby players too
