Munro is a red herring. He's the proverbial stopped clock at this level, the big mistake was not giving Nicholls game time earlier with some minor squad rotation v the 'easier' teams.

We have another mercurial Colin in the team for a gamble on a match winning rapid-fire 50 vs a hapless dismissal.

    Wasn't Nicholls injured?

I’m glad we made it to the semis. Chance to turn around our form. It doesn’t really matter in a tournament setting how you get to the knock out games.

Pakistan, SL etc too bad so sad.

Agreed but after the last 3 games it feels more like supporting the black knight from Monty Python than the plucky underdog.

I'll get into that as a supporter - the Black Knights supporting the Black Caps.

We've got them right where we want them! This is our year!

Assuming Pakistan don't bowl the Bangles out for 0, it's unusual to get to this stage of the tournament with seemingly as many selection questions as answers.

Even for the bowling. Ferguson is a given to come back in for Southee...... yet is Southee actually a worse option than Santner's Pies? Do we need to pick a spinner for the sake of it given Williamson's ability to role the arm over, etc...

As infuriating as Colin the Opener is, maybe it's just death or glory time, yet it's also Starc for him to try and hit out of the ground... and why is Guppy seeing it like a golf ball?

    I need more coffee.

The weird thing is, I still feel as though we are a chance! There is nothing to back that feeling up but I still feel we are a chance against Aussie!

Sometimes it's helpful to be a bit dim

We do have a chance, but as @Number-10 says it will have to be our bowlers doing the job. We had Australia on the ropes, and if we'd actually just taken our catches we could have rolled them pretty cheap. Which is insanely frustrating. On that note Latham has become a liability with the gloves, he regularly drops the ball even when it hasn't been edged, and we just can't afford wicket taking deliveries... not getting the wicket because straight forward catches are going down.

I agree with @mariner4life, we have bucketloads of talent but no backbone. Teams gone by would basically harass batsmen in the field by stopping the fuck out of everything and taking all our chances. This team seems to drops more than we catch, I think we are up at around 16 or 17 drops for the tournament which is disgraceful, and also points to a wider issue with culture and training. Stead and Kane both seem quite conservative and reserved, I wonder if we are lacking leadership in the shed now that Baz and Hess are both gone.

Based on the tournament thus far, Aus and India are a country mile ahead of the rest and if they play well nobody will beat them, which will make for a cracking final if they both make it.

England are next, they play aggressive cricket but also ride their luck a fair bit. If it comes off they can beat the above two, but they'll need lady luck on their side.

Black Caps and Pakistan are next in line. Hopelessly inconsistent and really need a lot to go their way to beat the above three. Which means taking ALL of their catches (both sides drop plenty), fielding like demons, and hoping the 50/50 stuff goes their way. So a chance... but a slim one.

Maybe it's time to stop treating this like holiday and take things seriously.

Even a journeyman club tennis player like myself notices a difference in my reaction time if I have a couple of beers the night before a game.

If Pakistan bat first and score 308+ more runs than the Bang bros.

Ok so safe to say we’re in and probably don’t deserve it

@MN5 apparently if they score 350, they have to bowl Bangladesh out for 38 or something, which basically means, if they lose the toss, they have no show of getting through.

Even if Pakistan did it they would be kicked out of the tournament because they would have rigged the match.

@Darren Yep, Nicholls was injured for game one, possibly game two.

In hindsight I wonder about some minor rotation during the pool games. There's the "don't change a winning team" argument, but I'm sure the Aussies have made a change here and there throughout.

@Donsteppa Hesson wrote an article earlier in pool play saying Black Caps needed to give Nicholls and Southee game time in case they were needed at the back end of the tournament.

Not sure if Stead has any clue. Young hit three centuries against Australia and they didn't pick him, but went with the out of form Munro instead. Sure he had surgery lined up, but that could have been postponed.

Needed to pull the plug on the Munro experiment the moment he got the gig (keep in mind Munro was Heeson's call) and give guys like Young and Blundell an opportunity instead.

I dont rate Stead as a coach/selector and think the Black Caps could be heading for some dark times.
Hesson made some big selection calls and most of them turned out to be quite inspired. Stead seems to have no clue.

But I actually really like our chances of rolling Aus. As the AB's have discovered knockout round are a different kettle.
I predict a NZ England final

I am sure that would get good odds.

The first job of the keeper is to take catches. We've compromised on keeping ability on the ground of batting ability, and haven't got the batting either.

The way the current squad has been selected and managed, Blundell will probably be brought in cold into a semi final...

Yep. I wasn't happy when he was chosen as Hesson's replacement. Bradburn was my choice. At least he knows how to coach a team to beat England. 🤣

We need to find a better batting coach than the departing McMillan too.

I didn't see any of the match after checking the current score when getting home late last night (161/1 IIRC). Entirely predictable when I heard the result this morning.

If it's going to be Aust In the SF show some fuckin' aggression and take the game to them - win or lose.
