Really surprised there isn’t much more comment on Gatlands return.
For one it is obvious that Coops was shunted aside to make the deal happen.
Secondly I have a concern that Gats has been away from the NZ game for too long. Sure he will add some new stuff in but part of the overall AB strength is a consistency through grades and levels. I don’t really see him adding any innovative stuff to our game.
The messy year in/year out/back again situation. Would hope he has some strong assistants lined up to make this work. Even then it is disruptive.
Is this the end of the Chiefs setup as created by Rennie and continued by Cooper? I don’t really see Garland in the same vein.what? no, actually, what?
The strength of NZ rugby is the continued production line of shit coaches that we have at Super level? Of which Cooper is one given the Chiefs play for the vast majority of the year. We get a guy back with a plethora of experience in different environments, and success to back that up, and it's a bad thing? Really?
I’m just raising some of the things that came to mind.

And everyone goes to the states at some point to get a look at their systems. That stopped being innovative 20 years ago.

@Higgins I assume this is indeed the group for the annual training camp. The Hurricanes and Crusaders have also named a very big group and will also hold camps, culminating in a couple of games. Unfortunately, only the Crusaders have published all the details of their U18 games.

Team Messam and Team Clarke have been selected from the University of Waikato Chiefs
Under 18 Development squad to match up against the Crusaders and Blues Under 18 sides this Saturday, 13 July.Team Messam will make the trip south to Blenheim to take on the Crusaders Under 18’s at Lansdowne Park. While Team Clarke will host the Blues Under 18’s at St Paul’s Collegiate. Both games will kick off at 12.30pm.
Chiefs Rugby Club talent development manager Kent Currie said the players have continued to develop across the week and are excited for the opportunity to represent the Chiefs Rugby Club this Saturday.
“The squad have had an excellent week of learning. They have been put through their paces both on and off the field and it is great to see them excelling in their development.
“There is plenty of excitement among the teams ahead of this weekend’s hit out against the Crusaders and Blues. It is expected both teams will experience tightly contested games allowing them the opportunity to implement what they have learnt this week,” said Currie.
Currie finished, “We wish both teams’ the best of luck and know they will proudly represent the Chiefs region.”

Chiefs U18s 14 - Blues U18s 12 (HT: 14-5)
A game of two halves as the Chiefs dominated the 1st half scoring 2 early tries as they regularly found gaps in the midfield and out wide. Handling errors or poor final passes let them down. The Blues scored late in the half after a sustained period on the Chiefs' goal-line.
In the 2nd half the Blues spent almost the entire time in the Chiefs 22. The Chiefs scramble defence was really good and kept the Blues out until the final minute when the Blues scored in the corner. A side-line conversion closed the gap but that was FT.
Both teams made wholesale subs at HT so it's hard to draw too many conclusions about the relative strengths of each team. An entertaining game though.
