I see the Suburbs club Premiers defaulted their first round Portola trophy match against East Tamaki today. Does anyone know why? I wonder if it is some kind of fallout from the Dillan Halaholo parent revolt drama.
-
@Daffy-Jaffy probably in protest at the decision to drop them down to the Portola Trophy, replaced by Papatoetoe. They didn't meet the criteria of having to field 4 senior sides I think so lost their place in the top 8 Alan McEvoy round.

@Duluth The number 11 that scored was AJ Lam who was in the squad last season but rarely if ever played. The centre who offloaded in the tackle for the 3rd try was Sasa Tofilau who apparently played a game for the Magpies last season and is with Rifles this year. The young halfback in the white headgear who scored the final try is Rilloy Suesue from Ponsonby he was in the Auckland team that won the Jock Hobbs u19's in 2017.
Sasa Tofilau has had an interesting journey from Samoa to Kelston boys, to the Brisbane Broncos academy, to the aussie under 20 union team, to Scotland rugby for 2 years them briefly it seems with Hawkes Bay last season.
Edit:- He was picked for the aussie u20's but never played due to injury. -
@Daffy-Jaffy Tofilau played 9 games for the Magpies last season, including 4 starts. He was a full squad member.
Having said that, you can have him
-
@Stargazer Thanks, I just found this vid of him last season -
-
@Daffy-Jaffy That's mostly footage from preseason games by the looks of it.

@Stargazer said in Auckland Rugby 2019:

Shit, I'd completely forgotten about him. Blocked him out maybe?
Every so often the Magpies import a group of players and they turn out to be failures. Leaguies, Cantabs, and now Islanders.

Former Warriors, Ta$man and Sunwolves player Viliami Lolohea is also playing club rugby in Auckland for Papatoetoe. I wonder if he was involved in last night's trial games?
-
@Daffy-Jaffy He played at Papatoetoe last season as well didn't he?
-
@Nogusta You were right. It suggests they will default the rest of the season in protest.
-
That rule has been in place for years. Not sure what Auckland Rugby are meant to do about it unless they decide from next year to get rid of the rule.

@Tim He seems to transfer clubs bewteen Wellington and Auckland as often as I transfer money from my bank account to my landlords. Surely there must be some residential qualification required if you wish to transfer from one province to another to play club rugby.
