I can see Latham relinquishing the gloves to open the batting with Guptill, especially if his broken finger isn't fully healed.
That wouldn't be the worst plan. Blundell did well in the recent series vs Oz. Hadn't really occurred to me as a possibility, but it's got merit!

So we dismissed India for 179
Boult is going to trouble a lot of people on English conditions with the new ball.
Meanwhile in the other warmup game Steve Smith has scored a century vs England
Our bowlers were impressive, considering no Starc, Hazelwood, or Cummins. Behrendorff had it on a string.
England also a bit cocky after their warm up series against a very poor Pakistan side.
Those conditions for Boult were very good. It had been dry all week and quite warm on Friday then Friday evening enough light rain appeared to freshen the wicket and green it up.
You can bet the grounds men will be very careful now. England will prefer flat tracks and go for a strategy of 380 beats 360 -

@Chris-B Yep. If Munro is going to open (and he really shouldn't be) then we MUST have 3 4 5 6 all firing. Guptill can also be inconsistent, although he usually puts on a few before he gets out to a dumb shot. At least four batsmen making a decent score, plus tight bowling and tight fielding and we have a chance. But if our openers fail then Kane or Ross has a bad day, we are gonna be a bit farked.
Mokes ... any team where the openers and 3 and 4 fail are going to struggle ... unless you have Michael Bevan batting at 6 or 7 ...

Was it mentioned that Afghanistan beat Pakistan?
Puts England’s pumping of them into perspective.

Or they are setting themselves up for the punt!

Just gotta hope that the Cricket Gods smile and at least one of the top six scores huge each game. Unlike other BC squads in the past the talent and ability is there for this to happen.

Our only hope is that one of the openers just gets rolling, and scores massively. Unfortunately, it didn't work in the 1996 knockouts with Harris and Germon, and I'm not sure it'll get there now Quality batting lineups with modern bats, pitches and grounds can chase some massive scores.

I'll say it now, anything less than the semis will be a massive disappointment.
This Black Caps team is fucken good, unfortunately I just think others are that little bit better when it counts.

Whilst this post is pretty accurate in the past I still stand by everything else I wrote. We have four genuine worldbeaters in this form of the game and a bunch of really decent support for them.
The much maligned Munro aside there's basically no deadweight in the team either.

@MN5 Could be argued that Southee is a bit of a deadweight. Way, WAY too inconsistent. Boult could well be one of the top bowlers at this tournament, especially with a little moisture in the air, but it's about the rest backing him up and not bowling fucking pies. Even in the warm up game against India, we let them off the hook a bit. Yes Taylor and Guptill took screaming catches, but some of Santner and Southee's bowling was just shit. We can't afford to let batsmen get in, or take foot off throat. Cos if we are chasing and have a bad start, we don't have the batting depth to recover.

Southee has a lot of credit in the bank for the selectors and I still hope he has at least one amazing performance in him.

Where was Southee shit on Saturday?
A few comments about Southee bowling shit when he in fact opened the bowling well.
First spell 5 overs for 17. Pitched the ball up and bowled well in tandem with boult.
The bowled 2 in second spell, got a set Dhoni out and went for 10, including 5 wides which wasn't great keeping.
I'm fully aware that Timmeh has his moments but as a swansong WC in seamer friendly England I think Tim is up for this and look forward to his performances, which have started well.
Again, where was his shit bowling on Saturday?

Southee has been torn apart on the fern for as long as his career has been going. Nothing new to see here folks.
At least I don't recall the last time someone had a whine about his batting so maybe we're growing up.
