@Number-10 :smiling_face_with_open_mouth: That's good news. Not a lot of love for Colenso Pirates after they tipped the Texans over with a runaway converted try late in the game last time I was home toward the end of the 2018 Maddison Trophy round.

I'm a bit worried about tomorrow down here as we take on the table leaders away from home and with three (well four if you count Vaea Fifita but we will probably be very lucky if we ever get to see him in an Axeman jersey again) of our players away up in Japan with the Huricanes teams so are only anticipating a win narrow win this week!

Tony Lamborn is apparently back from the USA; he played for Havelock North.

Yep, Tony Lamborn played the whole 80 for Havelock Nth.

Could only play for Hawke's Bay in 2019 if he misses World Cup selection for USA.

@Number-10 Depending on whether Kaifa is still contracted, Lamborn will have to compete with him and Brighouse for a spot in the squad. I assume Brighouse will be the one to miss out.

Can't see Lamborn play at 6 though.

Went to Tareha Reserve to watch unbeaten Taradale in the top of the table match v Hastings RS.

Two evenly matched teams, and probably the teams with the two biggest forward packs in the comp.

Taradale won 29-15, it was 15-15 midway through the second half, then the Hastings RS rserve hooker got a yellow card, and Taradale scored two converted tries in the time he was in the bin.

Magpies WTG member Jacob Devery went off injured after just 15 minutes.

Just for Higgins: Tech have made it three wins in a row beating Central 43-21, after losing their first five matches ... Indian bookmakers?

    🙂

To be fair my guys have had the most difficult draw possible with the opposition in the first four games being pretty much the four teams you expect to be in the Maddison Trophy Semifinals later this year. Maybe we deliberately tanked a few games to influence the bookmakers into offering attractive odds in future games. Anyway we must now have got our points differential down to less than 150 now!

Does anyone know the reasoning behind the transfer of a couple of MAC players to Tech mentioned midway through this article? Surprisingly I would be a little disappointed to read this if my guys actively poached these players as I know just how hard it is for clubs to keep existing players without players up and leaving. Even harder to accept players leaving clubs that appear to be doing a lot of good work in the community and are working hard to improve things on the field.

Please be careful in the wording of your replies please as sometimes things are best left unsaid.

@Higgins Sorry, I have no idea. I must admit that my eyes were stopping at this: "former North Harbour-based halfback-first five-eighth combination" when I first read that article. I was wondering whether these players were asked to come here to try getting a spot in the Magpies. But they didn't make the Magpies WTG, so I assume that's not the case.

@Higgins Did they transfer mid season? The HBRU shouldn't be letting that happen if that's the case.

@Nepia I'm not against it if it is to prevent clubs from defaulting due to lack of players (if the initial club of these players has enough players). I don't know whether this is the case, though.

I think normally MAC would be more in danger of defaulting due to lack of players than Tech?

@Nepia Don't know. That could depend on injuries.

😂 Lets not BS it, the big city Napier club Tech are always a much stronger club than the perennially struggling Flaxmere based MAC.

That's why I am uncomfortable with this situation. Sure, my guys have not had the best of starts and are not looking all that competitive at the moment but you have to suck it up and take it like a man when that is the case. I hope we did not actively poach them mid season as that would sit very uneasy with me. Tech have had long periods when they have been less than competitive and may even have been out of the top grade when I first joined them back in the late 1970s and have had periods of poor times on and off since then. Hence I can feel empathy for clubs that are struggling (except of course if your club is the combined Napier High School Old Boys-Marist or Taradale).

Hell I even had to witness another club I am associated with winning by 80 points yesterday over a club that lost a number of top players that had used their gym and other facilites all through summer (and all at no cost to them) only to upsticks and depart for other clubs a week or so prior to the start of the first competition game (they also lost a further premier player who transferred to another club mid week as well).

Club rugby is a bit worrying.

There were five defaults across all the grades on Saturday, and on top of that MAC withdrew from the Div 3 comp after the start, as did Havelock Nth from the Colts comp after the start.
