I like it. Except for you know, all the things wrong with it.
Neutral venue? Pretty fucking hard to do when you take geography in to account.
Play anywhere you want? Hmmmm do i live in a 3rd world country like South Africa, or Dunedin, or go live in Sydney? For more moneyBut for the tests i would welcome any change to the current format of the RC. It's shit.
There is no solution to the SANZAAR problem that will keep everybody happy.

@mariner4life No Problem with The Rugby Championship changes but Super Rugby all geared to make SA and Australia Stronger no more finals in NZ all our best players overseas Fuck off
-
@taniwharugby A final at a neutral venue? Ridiculous idea. That would be the death of SR franchises. There's nothing better than attending a home final of your own team, or any NZ team for that matter. Considering broadcasters are apparently pushing this, it seems to be an attempt to get the stadiums even emptier and more people in front of the telly. I mean, who would fly to Brisbane to see a Lions v Hurricanes final? Or to Hong Kong for a Blues v Waratahs final? Or to Johannesburg for a Chiefs v Rebels final? Or to Tokyo for a Crusaders v Sharks final?
And how many Kiwis would attend a Lions v Waratahs final in Auckland or Wellington?
And mid-week games for the TRC? Seriously.
The 'marquee player' concept is effectively proposing a safe zone for the movement of players, allowing them to move overseas but to countries in the same competition, meaning no schedule clashes and a closer high performance relationship. Having Australians playing in South African teams, for instance, could also help boost interest in the traditionally poorly-watched games between South African and Australian teams.
'Marquee players' playing for other SANZAAR franchises? Which All Black would want to play for an Aussie or Saffa team? If they want to leave NZ for the money, they'll go where the wages are better and that's not in Oz, SA or Argentina. I can imagine some Springboks, Wallabies and Pumas wanting to play in NZ for the better rugby, but it would be a one-way street, wouldn't it? Franchises here would sign them in case of injury or holes in their depth, but that would weaken Aussie & Saffa teams and the Jags, which is not what anyone wants. Would be bad for the comp.
There would also be themed rounds across the competition, a single sponsor for Super Rugby and consistent time slots in each nation.
One single sponsor? Which sponsor is willing to throw that much money at the comp? Wouldn't that give that one sponsor too much power over the comp? And consistent time slots? Don't we have that already?

how many of the 23 super finals have been held outside NZ? 5 or 6?
So if the final is between the Crusaders and HUrricanes, will they still sell out a ground in Aus/SA? Even if the daft part of drafting a few Saffas and Aussies into the Crusaders/Hurricanes happens...
we get the current system is broken, but doesnt mean you should break it further...even for a fuck ton more money.
Lets say some U21 super star is signed by an Aussie/SA team as a marquee player, what is then to stop him playing for 3 or however many seasons and then signing up with them for all this extra dosh floating around?
-
Like most of these leaks, it will be one proposal of many. But this part doesn't work for NZ SR teams: "all Super Rugby teams featuring their home city or region in their names." So that's the 'bottom of the south island Highlanders' vs the 'bombays and then north Blues' the 'odd bits left over from the blues and canes in the middle of the north island Chiefs' vs the 'bottom and east, sorta, of the north island Hurricanes'
The 'top of the south island NAME TBC's' have a bye

So because Japan won't pay for their shit full of foreignerw team, big Nations are stopping little Nations play?
Fuck off Michael, my respect for you has gone. He's not even playing for the wolves because he is on international duties. What a knob.
-
@Machpants he's sort of half right. There is a definite feel the economics are listened to more than "the good of the game". And the Sunwolves probably are the best chance for Asian growth. And playing Super rugby does prepare players more for Test rugby.
However he glosses over the fact that the Sunwolves in their current guise are worthless for growing anything. Full of imports, not embraced by the local union as a pathway, very little identity. Waste of space really.

Not a complete waste of space, they are very entertaining to watch this year.
Particularly enjoyed the game in Hamilton

It's not a (very) broke Ozzie, Bok or NZ to encourage rugby in Asia by paying for it tho, that's the big thing. Jap teams are stealing our players with big cash, but can't play a relative pittance for 'their' SR team. All the vitriol directed at SANZAAR for this pisses me off, it should all be pointed at the JRU.
-
I think that’s about right. There is plenty of money here, but they didn’t get the Top League teams on board and didn’t chose one team to go up. Then they didn’t fund the SWs and really recruit top class talent, so they’ve put themselves in this position.

The Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) is pleased to confirm St.George Queensland Reds head coach Brad Thorn will remain at Ballymore through 2020.
One year. That isn't a very long contract extension for a coach.
Didn't he sign a ten year agreement?

Jaguares mauled the guppies 17-52...huge upset.
-
@taniwharugby That huge win brings them right back in a wildcard position.
.
Some great tries in that game as well. Awesome seeing a loosie (Matera) chase his own kick and score from it!
