@Sneakdefreak although letting China reem them kinda goes against the whole reason for Brexit in the first place in wanting Britain to regain a bit more control of things.

If we let Huawei implement the 5G rollout here in NZ we might as well CC in the Chinese military in all our online activity. It's a bad idea to let them have a dominant position here.
The Uk govt just gave them the go ahead to join their 5g network.
I wonder if them being in the middle of trade deals outside of Europe had anything to do with that.

Dunno but it’s a pretty big call to make if they are putting trade ahead of compromising 5 eyes

@canefan @jegga Helen says England must let that terrorist back into UK.
Is what she did tantamount to Treason?
Hahahaha, I think they should too . they should also carry on arresting people for calling trannys men on twitter and elect Corbyn and then we can pick out the best and brightest from the inevitable exodus/stampede from the Uk
Sorry @catogrande you’re probably not going to make the cut. .
That's something of a relief. I'm in the Groucho Marx camp in that I wouldn't want to join a club that would let me in. I'll just sneak into France wearing a yellow jacket and spend the rest of my days eating and drinking too much. Oh. Wait...

The NZ/China relationship has been getting worse for a number of years - Winnie's meddling has just accelerated that.
How much of the US antipathy to Huawei is that by not going with US technology to build 5G the NSA's ability to electronically eavesdrop is compromised? Double whammy China can spy more /US less.
Personally I prefer Bao to Burgers and I'd rather hitch my wagon to the rising superpower than the one that's being eclipsed. Let's face it we can't trust our "friends and allies" let alone our enemies so fuck em all I say

I think it's more likely that Ericsson is the replacement infrastructure provider (other options are Nokia and Samsung). Alcatel Lucent are French/US but I wouldn't bank on Spark touching them with a bargepole after the XT debacle.
So not the US that is looking to shoehorn in. -

I'm reasonably ignorant around all this but didn't I read somewhere the UK is implementing it? Surely they wouldn't allow that to happen and have something in place to prevent it?
Are you somehow confused into thinking that the UK govt is competent?
For starters they have banked on low frequency (700Mhz) band 5G before even waiting to see what the best equipment being developed is.
NZ has held back numerous chunks of the spectrum to leverage off development by others. More likely that something like 3.5 or 26 Ghz will be used.
The other 'consensus' band being discussed is 600Mhz which NZ currently uses half of for Digital TV so only half is available and even that requires a shift of radio microphones.
Basically equipment companies will develop gear to run within parameters. The first big buyer out of the blocks will lead the way for the others. WE are keeping options open on both bands and suppliers -

In my excitement of getting to talk frequencies and the odd moves of the brits I forgot to mention that whatever infrastructure company is used there is a requirement in NZ (as in most countries) to build the systems with 'LI' (legal intercept) capabilities for services to use (after process), also the listening stations don't care what equipment is in use.
In theory, yes, a US installed comms system could have backdoors or data collection (the concern about China) but they don't need it in NZ as they already have gathering in place via agreement.
My guess with Huawei is that the call is simply a risk assessment one. With new 5G networks about to appear around the world it would be high risk to allow dominance by an 'unfriendly' country who could potentially snoop/cause deliberate disruption etc etc. Don't forget that mobile networks aren't just people making calls and sending messages. They are used to monitor and control infrastructure aspects like power. With the IOT capabilities under 5G likely to be much higher, the disruption risk increases as well. You simply don't hand over that potential to an 'unfriendly' with their own agenda. -
I certainly don't want anyone hacking my fridge to see how much beer I drink...
I leave for work at 6:15 last thing I want is a text from my fridge as I get up saying Remember XXXX is on special at Countdown today only $19.95 and you only have three beers left. Oh and better get some Liver tabs from Red Seal as well

Huawei
There is a regular drip of news about Huawei at the moment highlighting their business practices. The latest being their "Competition Management" department meeting with an Apple Watch heart rate sensor supplier and trying to steal trade secrets.
My favourite one is T-Mobile showing them around their lab, and they tried to steal the robot arm that they used for phone testing so they could reverse engineer it.
This is all seperate from the their links to the Chinese Military.
