The Aussie fans and commentators must be really starved for sledges and agro this summer if we have to pretend that was a remotely clever or funny. Same goes for Kohli telling Paine he is just a stand-in captain - low level stuff.
I had a crack at you for this, but you are right.
I think there is a wider story here, which this is just one part of.
People want to feel good about the Aussie cricket team again. OK maybe not all 'people', but certainly Australians.
So everything in this series has been viewed through a very sympathetic lens. This win was 'one for the ages', despite it being pretty similar to every home win we've ever had (and we've had plenty). The sledging battle was titanic, aggressive, witty and sophisticated all at the same time.
Tim Paine is now viewed as the white Mandela, with a bit of Gandhi and Allan Border thrown in. The way he stood up to Hitler (Virat Kohli) will be spoken about for generations.
Is this team that different to previous versions? Yes, but not by that much. They've clearly dialled back the aggression, but really apart from Warner and the occasional fast bowler outburst it was never that high in the first place.
This team is viewed overly positively, in the same way the previous side was viewed overly negatively.
It helps that the side on the other end is India, the biggest group of cheating fucking cnts ever assembled in human history, led by the worst individual the world has ever seen. Fuck he can bat, though.

@antipodean and a team who have never bothered to give their bowlers even a basic fucking defence. Again: pure arrogance.
Say what you will about Aussie cricket fans but they're very gracious in victory 😉

So, given this is true, why do some people want them to win in Australia?

Good game, deserved winners and nice to see the Aussie boys enjoying themselves again.
This series is now more intriguing than ever
What role will momentum play here and can India stifle that?
Please have some colour on the, lately, concrete looking MCG. Last year's boxing day test was hardly watchable, no sideways movement and sweepers on the square boundaries throughout.
I predicted 2-1 to India and I guess a draw would set up a cracker in Sydney

I reckon the inclusion of Jadeja will liven things up a bit. Yadav can't stay after that performance, and India with no front line spinner is just not India.

I hope the rest of the Australian fan base can get back to saying this kind of thing with a straight face once their identity crisis is over!
You make a lot of good points. I disagree with you that the Smith team was widely disliked by the public prior to the scandal. Yes, Warner was a certified dickhead who was not well liked, not dissimilar to Watson before him, and there was a bit of fatigue over the continued selection of the Marsh boys (which continues). But overall it was a pretty stock standard Aussie team having mixed results... then Smith cried and Warner became a recluse and that's when the public turned.
I'd honestly prefer the Aussies went back to their stock standard way of playing the game, 90% on the line and 10% over it.

Just like last time. The groundsman should be fired.
