Hit a few breweries in Sydney the other weekend. My favourites:
- Batch Brewing - Their APA is excellent. Honourable mention for their Double Rainbow, a XXPA.
- Young Henrys - Summer Hop IPA.
- Wayward Brewing - India Pale Ale.
- Grifter Brewing - Neighbourhood NEIPA.
All great breweries.
Been meaning to get down to Grifter to try that NEIPA as I'm a big convert to that style of beer. How was the Neighbourhood NEIPA?
Nice enough for me to recall. Fruity hops with balanced bitterness (in comparison to my usual preference of heavy IBU ales). Although I was about eight hours in on day two by that stage.
@antipodean have you been to Akasha yet? One of the best breweries in Aus in my opinion.
No I haven't. I'll put that on my list. It's not Portland, but there's a fair few breweries these days and we've got Bentspoke and Capital Brewing on our door step.

I haven't actually tried this:

I know that there are quite a few recreational fishermen here so might be worth supporting. I will give it a go and give it to family, friends that I don't like if it is shit.

@RoninWC Just looked up the availability of Deep Creek's Pontoon in a Monsoon IPA at First Choice liquor. $150 a case - that's not a displaced decimal point. That's one hundred and fifty dollarydoos.
I suppose part of that is they're 440mL cans, but sweet baby jesus this government is taking the piss.

Waitemata Sparkling was an old classic. Was probably the Auckland equivalent of Waikato but drinkable.

If you haven't got munted on 440ml 'Ranfurly draft' or 'South Island draft' you haven't lived
My time of drinking shitty beers was late 90's/early 2000's while at Otago Uni
Waitemata was fine. I would have that ahead of most of the usual brands. It was only around for a few months at my local liquor store and only in crate bottles. I think they were offloading soon to be expired stock in the student area
Double Brown was the best of the genuinely shitty beers once you got used to it. The worst part was the last 2-3 sips because the sediment would settle leaving a watery gritty mouthful. You would have another one already open to wash away the taste
Ranfurly was just bad. Tasted metallic. It was slightly cheaper than Double Brown though..
There was one worse than Ranfurly. It had a really generic name.. 'Kiwi' or 'New Zealand' something? It was a whole dollar a dozen cheaper than Ranfurly. That $1 was very important at the time.
Was it Big Horn? Used to be $7:99/Doz at the Totara Lodge bottle store.
Purchased it once and couldn't stomach it. Awful stuff.

Big Horn
Oh, I had that a couple of times. Definitely below Ranfurly
Some old NZ beer cans: http://www.canmuseum.com/Search.aspx?PageNo=1&StartRowIndex=1&Brand=&Flavor=66&Volume=&Country=173&Year=&Description=
(Maybe I was thinking of NZ Lager?? But the reviews for it seem too good) -

@antipodean Same for the Brewtiful Haze, way too much but I can't help myself and keep buying the 4 packs at $35.
But say when you compare this to one you would be familiar with, the Bentspoke Sprocket IPA, one of my absolute favourites, at around $25 a 4 pack for 375 ml cans, it isn't too bad as it works out to be $10 for an extra 260 ml.
Okay now that I have put it that way, I find myself slowly muttering to myself trying to justify the additional $10.
But you are spot on, the taxes on these beers is just utterly retarded! Also, I do think some Breweries and local distributors are taking the piss with the pricing.

there are a lot of beers brewed in this country that i would like to drink, but the pricing is out of control.
I love Stone & Wood Pacific Ale, but $75 a carton can get fucked, when i can get Jame Squire Swindlers, or Wild Yaks, that aren't much different, for $50.
Would love to drink Hop Hog's occasionally, but $22 for 4 stubbies? Fuck right off.
Between the taxes and cost to brew, most of these craft beers are just massively over priced. It actually stops me trying most of them, because i am unwilling to fork out when it might be shit.

@mariner4life Is a carton a 24 pack?

ha, I remember not long after I arrived in the UK the local offy had a box/carton of Steinlager for £24 (exchange was $3.3 then: $80) and we bought that without batting an eye...asked the owner if he'd get more and he said no, it doesnt sell, and we were like, um, duh!

In the same way glass sizes differ from State to State and pool rules are different.
