Super Rugby Rumours: Highlanders first-five roundabout continues as Hurricanes nab Barrett backup

Super Rugby Rumours: Highlanders first-five roundabout continues as Hurricanes nab Barrett backup

New Zealand's provincial season will come to a close on Saturday night and by the end of next week plenty of the competition's top performers will have found new homes at Super Rugby level.

Roe is expected to join the Chiefs while Jones – son of All Blacks great Michael – has reportedly been snapped up by the defending champion Crusaders. Rayasi, who was schooled at Wellington’s St. Patrick’s Siverstream, has been linked with a move home to join the Hurricanes.

@tim Aren't the Chiefs already stacked at halfback though? Can't imagine 4 halfbacks being logical.

@yeetyaah Yep. Maybe the Counties guy is out injured, or is getting a release?

I'm not sure Roe is ready for SR yet but kind of ironic he gets poached by Tito and Taranaki and then makes the Chiefs (if true).

Iosefa-Scott has been a huge improver this year after me thinking he wasn't even NPC quality.

The Chiefs need to reward Tucker and McWhannell.

As to Reece, the AB7s could use him. He should be elligible next month.

    @tim

it would be hard to fathom why any New Zealand Super Rugby team wouldn't be interested in talking to Hayne.

Geezus. Surely, NZR won't be tempted to fall for that bullshit and sign a player who's played zero XVs and only wants to be developed at SR level in NZ so he can play for Fiji? I think it's easy to fathom why NZ franchise won't be interested.

@stargazer if we ignore the fact he wouldn't qualify under the rules NZR seem to pick and choose when to impose about non-AB qualifying players, which team actually has room for him, assuming he would play outside back?

Not sure he is even the kind of player you make special dispensation for due to his 'profile'.

If he's that keen to play rugby, ARU need to get him and a few younger promising players over to bolster thier ranks.

Would've thought there'd be more leaks and rumours about squads now. NZ rugby media are pretty dull though.

Are the Blues going to select a backup 8 this time? I know they have Sotutu, but he's very raw.

He is involved in the Red Bull Sevens series so that maybe his main focus but still train and play development at the Crusaders.

I noted during the NZ-Aust schools game that the Aussie commentator mentioned Jones was part of the Crusaders academy. I'm surprised his old man has let him go south but maybe that's a reflection of the current state of the Blues.

Niko would be a no.7 going forward as he looks small for a no.8.

Now that Auckland are first and the Blues are last, I wonder if they'll be allowed to use that fancy Ellerslie training facility?

nah mate, that'd be like taking a punt on an over the hill Benji Marshall and basing your marketing campaign around it. Before he'd played a proper game of footy.

    Oh.
