30 Day Paleo Challenge
-

Yeah man! I'm the same shape as Mess, we work out together. Although I try and take it easy on him when we are sparring in the ring...... :)

I've got a bit of beer fat and skinny skinny legs that whack me all out of proportion and makes for Mrs Hooroo mickey taking pleasure!
-

First weigh in since I started last week and I'm sitting at 101.5kg - I think I was around 103.7-104.7kg. Pretty damn happy with that TBH and if I hadn't lost some I might have thrown in the towel!

I guess it shows the difference that diet (especially no sugar) makes, as I haven't done any more exercise than normal.

Energy levels seem to have stabilised, I don't feel dopey all the time, I'm also not feeling hungry in between meals/snacks like I was for the first few days.

I've been poaching chicken breasts the last few days, and man have they been turning out nice. I've just been chucking some veges in with them (whatever is left over) and it makes a nice stock that I use with my stir fry.
-

Ok, with a day to go for my first week on this challenge I've lost 2.5kg. 50 days of the calorie counting was 2.2kg, so we have a winning approach methinks...

Less than 1kg to go to my first goal of under 80kg. Have 1RM in the Snatch and the Clean & Jerk due today, so will see what impact losing 4.5 kgs in 2/3 months has had, and this weeks diet.

Had a few cravings yesterday, but since I have added some fruit back I sated those with Raspberries and Blueberries (a small handful as a post workout meal). Yep, I bloody went to xFit yesterday - Beach WOD at Browns Bay, lost of squats, sit-ups, press-ups and shit tone of burpees and a nice swim between each one. Was pretty fun actually.

Have done four sessions this week, with the 5th today. Body is holding up really well, no soreness or any real tiredness either.
-

Yelps! Good that you made the change. Good luck with that last kg.

cut cauliflower into smaller florets, drizzle with some olive oil, a bit of salt and pepper and a decent covering of smoked paprika. Bake at 160-170 till it starts to caramelise then finish with a squeeze of lemon juice. It's the business!

I'm definitely going to try this now ... I tried one of the cauliflower mash recipes all over the internet last night and it was tasted way too sweet. Then I had my normal steamed cauliflower today and it was still sweet. Hopefully this one wont be sweet.

Does anyone know anything about cauliflowers? Could I have gotten an extra sweet one and most I buy wont be as sweet?
-

Taste, relying on smell quite a bit, will change a little depending on the conditions under which something has been grown.

I say roll with it. As I keep explaining to my kids: once you cut down the sugars, you start to detect more flavour in everything. Whenever I clean up my eating for a long period, then have something like fast food, I feel nauseous because my brain can't handle the transmission!
-

I'm still on target, last two days have been pretty rough with cravings and social side of the weekend throwing up temptation in my face. Haven't fallen off the wagon, weight has leveled out at 80.8kg, chiefly I think because I have upped my fruit - which I just have to do in the weekend.

Will dial that back down during the week when work can distract me for most of the day.

Second week is where you are supposed to get an energy boost after going through the detox first week, that would be nice...
-

Alright, now we are talking. Found a butcher with Paleo sausages and......wait for it.....Paleo Bacon!

Ten days in with no sugar, no alcohol, or any processed food whatsoever I almost ate the Bacon from the bloody packet.

Have scheduled in five xFit workouts again for this week (gotta get those points), so Friday will be halfway.
-

What makes the bacon paleo, Kirwan? No nitrates?

No Nitrates and not cured with sugar, like pretty much every Bacon you can buy in a supermarket is. I'm not allowed Honey either...
-

Yeah, now that you mention it, I haven't found any bacon without sugar.

How does it taste? -

I'll let you know after breakfast tomorrow :)
-

It's been a week since my last weigh in and I'm sitting on 99kg! Yay. 2.5kg loss from last weeks weigh in. Feels good to be under the 100kg mark. For some reason I was feeling fat this week and was worried I wasn't going to move much.

I officially can't eat cauliflower anymore, sad as it was a staple in my diet but the thought of it makes me feel yuck after my mash and roasted experiments made them to sweet for me.

Regarding bacon, I have Kiwi brand, it's lowish sugar I think (1.8g per 100g) but I have no idea of the nitrates etc - but doesn't fit the paelo so of little help to you Kirwan, sorry. It has been my saviour in the morning, maybe every second breakfast I'll have one slice with my eggs.

Have not really had any sugar cravings for the past week or so which is good.

Might start increasing my exercise by doing the Marks Daily Apple push ups, squats, chin ups/pull ups, overhead press and planking which I can do without going to a gym.
-
Forgot to reply, it tasted pretty good. Was a pretty thick cut, so was a little bit like ham. Still bloody tasty.

Paleo sausages were spectacular, so meaty. -

Don't forget burpees, do 50 of those and you won't need to much else. -

Sounds good!

Personally, I think the key for going Paleo is to totally deprive yourself of anything but the most basic paleo meals for a few weeks. That way as you start to introduce substitutes for your old favourite foods, you are hanging out for them, they taste great and are a treat. If you go straight to paleo-friendly equivalents straight away they pale in comparison - especially Paleo baking with almond and coconut flour. It does the job, but you can't compare it to regular baking, pancakes, etc.
-

^^^ this is good advice.

I did similar (but not for paleo) and deprived myself of all sauces etc and what I deemed as treats. I then started using a few low calorie sauces and making stuff like low carb protein pancakes and they all tasted awesome to me. Wife (who just eats what she wants and cranks abs year round) tried some of it and thought it was horrible and nothing like the real thing.
-

Yeah, I did that by accident. By the time I made the Paleo pancakes I was doing cartwheels about how good they tasted.

The health store hippie that works where I buy the Coconut Flour said it takes three months for your taste buds to switch to the new diet. And the Whole9 crowd say that this week in the challenge is where your mind starts sabotaging your efforts, as they say the brain doesn't like being deprived of something and sugar is basically an addiction.

I buy into some of that, I've been having utterly bizarre dreams about food and huge cravings for sweet foods. I get past it but it's not fun.

So I'm half way through today, I've been hitting all my targets and have only missed five points (a missed workout) from all the available points in the challenge. I'm also on target for the most xFit sessions in a month, and today is only day I'm feeling sore (last two workouts had backsquats and deadlifts)

I'm completely confident that I will finish the second half. Weight is 80.5kg, so the loss has settled down, but tantalizing close to my goal. Clothes are much looser and have these weird lines on my stomach, think they are called abs.
