Highlanders vs Chiefs

Highly entertaining game, if thoroughly unprofessional from both teams to only front for a half each. Chiefs deservedly losing their bonus point.
I like the Chiefs wingers, always something happening when they get the ball.

22-45. Lots of points, not a lot of quality
There was some great quality. Some rubbish too, but some very good play in first half.
ALB and Messam showed class. ALB especially was working hard on getting his hands past the tackle to set those outside him free. Just the kind of distribution that cracks defences.
Messam looks like he would still do a proud 60 minutes in black. So much better than Luke of the Whitelocks.

Chiefs really need to not blow this bonus point
But they do. Disgraceful really from 42-0
Dudes from Auckland should be veeerrry careful with their adjectives

Blues being crap doesn’t mean other teams get away with pissing away bonus points

Was a very good game from Messam, but the defence from both sides was very poor at times. That’s what I was referring to regarding the lack of quality.
Was basically a game of touch

I disagree. You sound like Stephen Jones. Yes, defensive lapses, but many were caused by created situations or good lines. Chiefs were quite clinical in making the right decisions at speed in the first half. That makes any defence look poor

Missed tackles, slow line speed, lethargy from the Clan. It was laughable, even the Clan fans on the thread were getting stuck into them
When they upped their effort in the second half the Chiefs scored three points.

I enjoyed the win but coming third in the NZ conference could be worse than fourth. Would you rather play the Canes/Saders or Rebels in your first knockout game?
Tahs beat the Rebels on Friday to pretty much wrap up the Aussie conference.

I'm not going to repeat comments but that was a truely bizarre game to watch.
What I will say is, why do teams think they will be able to get away with a 7-man scrum? The odds are you will be under pressure, particularly on your own defensive feed. The first objective has to be to stop conceding a turnover at the source. The Chiefs gifted the Highlanders a try but doing exactly that when they had two loosies locking the scrum. Dumb.

L Whitelock
Brain worms are the only explanation for picking him ahead of Ioane.
Akira on the line saves two trys last night, Lucky Luke gets a yellow card and lets in a million trys.
It was a pretty marginal yellow though. Looked like it was a knock on in the tackle.
(though I think he was offside anyway, and with all the PK's that might have been enough for a YC)
Nah, he was on his knees and slapped the ball down. Was dumb.
Ball was out of the ruck though I thought. Him being on his knees is neither here nor there. I didn't think he slapped the ball.
Oh well I will just have to wait for the replay (fat chance of me watching that).
Err. Yes it is. Can't play the ball off your feet

You can make a tackle though.

If the rest of the team could lift their efforts to within a mile of Hemopo and Thomas we might be in this.
Thomas?
Rob Thomson aka Rob Thomas aka Matchbox 20.

Well my memory of Antiques Roadshow is better than that of the game last night, but I thought he was trying to make a tackle of the player with the ball and his hand contacted the ball as a pass was attempted.
It is technically true that a player off their feet cannot make a tackle, but in my humble opinion it would take a very officious referee to penalise the player in that instance with one knee on the ground.
Having said all that, I think he was pretty clearly offside in the redzone after a number of team PK's and the YC was deserved for his being offside. In fact that was what I thought it was for until the ref made his secondary signal.
