@smuts said in Things that annoy you about rugby...:

My internal sense of rugby is that every phase should be a fair contest for the ball. And penalties should only come where someone deliberately tries to ruin that contest (including by doing something dangerous.)>
There are too many areas of the game right now that don't feel like a fair contest. >
    Rucks ain't. >
    Mauls ain't.

I thoroughly agree. Rucks are so little a contest that players don't generally bother - they just try to hold up players, or rip the ball rather than contest on the ground.

Scrums also aren't much of a contest - they are a machine for running down clocks and awarding penaltues. Actually pushing the other side off the ball is rare

    Haven't read much above.

    1. When there is a knock on and the ref hasn't called it a knock on and the player is in front and picks it up. Should be a scrum such a shit penalty.
    2. Any guy going for an intercept. Its 99% of the time not a deliberate knock down its an intercept attempt that goes wrong. Hate seeing people carded for that.
    3. Drop kicks and shots at goal. I reckon if they miss and it goes dead should be a scrum on the 22 to the other team (or from where the kick was taken).
    4. Backs.

@magpie_in_aus Point 4 wasn't required to identify as a forward. Point 3 had already done that effectively. 🙂

On Point 3, a minute of arsing about forming up, crouch, bind, collapse, rinse and repeat,....random penalty to someone...

Why not restart with a toss of the coin where the winner gets a penalty on the 22 - or, at the refs discretion the loser sometimes gets the penalty? 🙂

Couldn't disagree more. The amount of times I've "gone for an intercept" knowing full well if the pass sticks it's a try. Catch it or get penalised - it's such a negative way to play.

@mariner4life If there's one thing in my arsenal I'm Test level at; it's playing negative cheating rugby in the face of superior talent and athleticism. I like to call it a winning mentality.

twins!! my mantra was "if they are better than you, play dirty and negative" easy to do in the forwards. bad for your teeth and fingers though

You are the guys who would play Jonah Lomu Rugby and with 30 seconds to go run zigzag backwards and run it dead aren't you.

Im not anti the penalty for that more when you see people carded. The times when you see people just get a hand to it tap it up and just regather and shoot off vs the times they get a hand to it and don't regather. Both are honest attempts.

*if we got rid of backs this would likely solve this problem

I think you'd prefer opposed scrum and maul sessions more than rugby. 😉

@chris-b Yeah maybe not a scrum maybe just a free kick or something. I just don't like that in most cases a team chances their hand taking a shot or drop kick and then high % they will get the ball back again.

Im actually not just a forward.....I'm a lock who tells the coach im a loosey first but also first to put their hand up for covering 1st 5.

If the team taking the dropout can accurately kick to the forwards they'll doubtless drop it in any case. Usually on purpose, in my opinion. 🙂

    Especially No.4. 🙂

Re No.2. Agree entirely. Much of the time it is a legit intercept attempt. Can I also plead for the use of the term "deliberate knock-on" or "deliberate knock-forward"? "Down" is legal.

It has led to people, even on here, suggesting deliberate knocks backwards should be penalised.

@booboo it hasn't lead to people (me) suggesting that...just questioning the application of it when one can be a completely genuine attempt of an intercept and you get a YC, but going back can be very deliberate and 'negative' I know that's the word people like to use 😉

anywhoo, I have had my say on that topic before.

Don't know if it has been covered but guys who play with their socks down piss me off.
If they weren't meant to be pulled up as part of the uniform they wouldn't be long.

Love it haha I wear them down. Too bloody hot playing in Gods country aka sunny Hawkes Bay.
Still have never really understood the point of long socks.
Don't worry there was still hair on my legs.

I'm not worried about socks but I can't believe that the refs and NZR don't police the players for not wearing a mouth guard. It is meant to be compulsory and should be for ACC reasons but a lot of ABs and NZ super rugby players don't wear them. It seems to be more PI players too.

@mariner4life "cheat if you have to, son. Cheat if you have to."

Also, nothing wrong with getting your revenge in first.
