Caught up with Mark Ozick and Josh Syms at Waitemata Park in Auckland yesterday, they were watching the Waka Nathan challenge cup which is to anyone outside of Auckland a preseason rally day were all the Auckland Club teams are on show,
A couple of players they were looking at were Siosiua (Josh) Kaifa a very rugged open side flanker who has appeared on a handful of times for Auckland and Sebastian Visinia younger brother of Lolagi Visinia,Sebastian is a very tall rangy midfielder.
Talking to both coaches they are looking for more gainline physicality which was a real issue for them in 2017.
Sam Ulufonua the Lock from ponsonby in Auckland has been signed but only on a PD contract,I stand to be corrected but it’s something similar to player development contract for younger players.
Gone from 2017 are both Vaega brothers and Hugh Renton ironically the younger of the Vaega brothers was running around for Gramnar Tech and I believe Cardiff is running around for Karaka in the Counties Manukau region.

Both coaches seem to have a very good senergy with each other.
Auckland can never seem to select the right talent but man alive there is some talented rugby players running around at many of there clubs, I guess it’s all about having the ability to select that talent.
Even Southland have signed the 3 Costa brothers from Eden Rugby in Auckland,

Kaifa while he looked a bit off the pace fitness wise, had very good size,is very physical, good over the ball and very accurate on the tackle will be a very good acquisition to the Bay.

    Both TA boys.

I assume that means Randle is staying as the backs coach.

    @tim

In NZ, I don't think so, but he might have been involved in some form of coaching in Ireland when he was forced to retire.

Hoeft was mainly the scrum/set piece coach so I would assume White would take on a similar role. I expect Gibbes to be hands-on.

I see that he's coming straight from High School coaching. Is he a good appointment?

A great appointment, he’s done great things with Christ’s college and the High School Old Boys club

This is not a dig but more of a curiosity, is that very hard to do? Aren't Christs always strong or am I incorrect?

We hadn’t beaten boys high in 16 years prior to Thorne taking over.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/super-rugby/102812302/tasman-Mako$-agree-to-allow-imposing-back-rower-jordan-taufua-to-play-in-japan

Highlanders loose forward and Canterbury captain Luke Whitelock is understood to be pondering a move to a Japanese club, which would rule him out of contention for the red and blacks' title defence.

If Whitelock, who captained the All Blacks in their mid-week match against a French XV in Lyon last year, elects to follow Taufua to Japan it is understood Canterbury have told the long-serving back rower they will not stand in his way.

Another Highlanders utility back Richard Buckman, is also understood to be mulling a stint in Japan instead of returning to Hawke's Bay.

NZ Rugby at times allows selected players, often those who have proved loyal to their respective Super Rugby and provincial union teams over a long term, to play in Japan instead of staying for the domestic competition. Taufua, Whitelock and Buckman are established members of the New Zealand circuit, and allowing them to work in Japan has the potential to allow them to boost their income – with wages not paid by NZ Rugby – while remaining committed to Super Rugby.

I guess Taufua being told by Shag he'd get a chance with the ABs wasn't true(always seemed a bit of a stretch). If he goes, he won't be available for the ABs this year. He'd need a killer season plus a couple of injuries to other backrowers to get in next year.

Seems a good chance he'll be playing for Samoa in the World Cup next year(assuming Samoa beats Spain in the qualifiers).

    Bugger.

Fergie was the first ever All Black I heard of. The kids down the road had a pet lamb called Fergie and I still recall them explaining to me who Fergie was.
