Black Caps v England Test series

@no-quarter Hmm. O.K. I would back Southee at the death rather than Henry and he would likely have to do that? Both of them can go for a few.
Pretty hard to squeeze them both into the team. Unusual for NZ to be in that position, and nice.
-
@no-quarter Totally agree, especially in tests. I think the key message of Allan Donald's coaching, which continued through Shane Bond's tenure, was to hunt as a pack, and having 3 seamers who are picked together regularly is crucial to maintaining that. It's easy to roast Southee at times, but I think he's part of the equation which makes Boult so effective, so that shouldn't be underestimated.
Edit: and as I say this, Southee shows it by following up Boult's breakthrough with a maiden over to keep the pressure on.
-
Soon to be our 3rd and 4th highest test wicket takers with Wagner not far behind.
-
Thatβs 7
-
Hope Southee picks up a desereved 5-for, he's been absolutely superb today.
-
Southee gets his Michelle, big partnership broken.
Can we get the remaining 2 wickets before they reach 300 -
Southee reaching 218 wickets and drawing equal with the mighty Chris Cairns with two fewer matches in hand but a higher average.
Cairnsy far and away a better batsman though. Fuck he was good, anyone who suggests that he doesn't walk into an all time test 11 has rocks in their heads.
Happy for T Southee though cos he'll have 4th spot all to himself before too long. NZ have never had a quick bowling trio anywhere near as good as the three playing today.

He doesn't and he's getting further away! At the very best you've got to scrape him in as the eleventh pick - but, he doesn't make it in my opinion.
Sutcliffe
Turner
Dempster
Crowe
Williamson
Taylor
McCullum
Vettori
Hadlee
Bond
CowieNo room for Cairns, Martin Donnelly, John R. Reid, Bruce Taylor or Trent Boult.

You CANNOT seriously make a case for Cowie and Dempster. They played 19 tests between them, great stats not withstanding.

@mn5 Is it an all time team or not?
Bond only played 18 tests.
Well yeah it is all time.
I hear ya re Bond. He was awesome but it is a coin toss if he gets in.
My team is....
Sutcliffe
Turner
Williamson
Taylor
Crowe
Fleming
McCullum
Cairns
Vettori
Hadlee
Bond ( 18 tests is enough. Barely...if not him then Boult ) -

@mn5 If you're playing the Australian all time team, then mine is better.
They're going to play Bradman and I'm going to bring on Cowie immediately. He only faced the Don once - with devastating results!
I just like the fact my team has test hundies down to number 10.
It's always awkward trying to decide if someone who played fuck all deserves a mention. I mean, in years to come people might pick Adam Voges in an all time Oz team unless they look closer and realise he plundered runs for fun against the worst Windies team of all time.
-
@mn5 Yeah - you've got to read what was written about the people you haven't seen to make sure they weren't Rodney Redmond.
But, assuming that the NZ team is going to be compared to other All time international teams - we'd be mad not to pick Cowie and Dempster who top the averages for us.
When you look at an alltime Australian batting line-up they're not going to even consider anyone who didn't average mid-50s.
And we have to field Flem who struggled mightily to reach a 40 average in his last test?
Go with Dempster - he was virtually invincible and averaged 65!

I'm a sucker for someone who can do the business over a long period of time. Also Flem was a fantastic leader.
We're not Oz.....batsmen who average under 40 get mentioned in our all time lists....
