    Straya v Seffrica

Weird dismissal for Bancroft. Wandering down the wicket to Philander and edging to the keeper.

Reasonably interested in this series. Two top teams. Both unlikeable: Seffrica less so

    Morne's last.

Aus won toss. Batting. 15 for 1.

It's not too hard to see why test cricket is fucked. SA v Aus is a massive series. And no one turned up. No one turned up to watch SA v India either. No one turns up in NZ to watch tests. Not many turn up to watch in Aus unless it's England, or the Indian fans to watch India. Why would administrators schedule tests when they don't make any money from it. It's dead.

As for the game, Aus 225/5 when bad light stopped play. As usual Smith and Warner have top scored with a 50 each.

@mariner4life Although a different question is how many people tuned in on TV (and how much money do the cricket administrations make from TV rights)?

Which leads to a different point. Shouldn't Sky and the various sports administrations whose sports they cover live (i.e rugby and cricket) issue Sky subscribers with some sort of ID card that entitles us to healthy discounts on admissions to live sports events - since we have, in effect, already paid to watch the match(es)?

In regard to the game, in theory I'd have the Jaapies marginally ahead in this one, since I generally use a par first innings total of 220/4 as a rough guide.

But, I'm inclined to think that bowling is a marginally stronger suit for both these teams, so maybe the Aussies are slightly ahead.

Question for those that have tv coverage (booo sky nz), is that an ok score on this pitch?

@duluth also interested to know, given RSA are 3 down for 60-odd

Sounds like the “great on paper” South African top order once again crumbled at the first sign of pressure...

@duluth 3 sessions I've seen suggest it's a bit slow and difficult for batsmen to dominate but not a poor wicket by any means. Almost no swing for the Aussies early doors but seam position not great either. Spinners at first change says a lot.
Lyon is the most valuable player the Aussies currently have in test cricket, more important than Smith. 20 wickets win tests. He started the rot as Starc and Hazelwood offered very little at the start.

Thankfully and with much appreciation in these shrieking times, the Saffa TV crew peppered the screens between overs with fit chicks and fellas carrying and drinking from jugs - jugs all round really, bless 'em

Just watching the highlights, Starc's michelle and even Hazelwoods wicket are exquisite examples of reverse swing.
Starcs deliveries are held like inswingers yet tail away right to left late. In Hazelwoods wicket that ball, if new, tends straight or slightly away.

Really impressive stuff from a special bowling unit the ockers have got. Africans will have to prepare green seamers to have a shot this series I'm thinking. Otherwise Lyon and reverse will be dominant

@nta Amla's not really the batsman he was. I see he's nearly 35 and can't be far from done.

Looks like the Jaapie batsmen - excluding AB - aren't going to be good enough.

    @chris-b early days.

Amla definitely isn't what he was, but then neither is Khawaja.

So after a healthy 400+ lead, we're currently skittling the Protobokeas by the looks.

    They're 4 down for negative 350-odd.

They've added another 60 with no loss. 295 to go.

Century to Markram - which could have been even better if he hadn't been involved in the ABdV runout.

But the Proteas at 9 down and still 124 runs behind, you'd say they're done. Could have been over by now except for all the time they've lost to bad light.

Pretty handy having people like Starc to shut the prospect of wagging tails down.

De Cock and Markram both well set and cruising along - needing less than 130.

    Markram gets out.

Next thing Starc takes three tail end wickets in one over and it's thanks for coming SA.

Elgar Amla, AB and Faf look similarly crestfallen as our ODI middle order - the other guys have done so well that even modest contributions might have been enough - but, fuck all isn't!

This post is depressing and accurate. I love good test cricket but I do worry it is gonna cease to exist at some stage.
