I've come up with a change that can make the Winter Olympics more enthralling from a spectator's perspective. I'd change the biathlon to shoot at snowboarders as they appear over the parapet on the half-pipe.
Whenever i watch the biathlon i instantly think of a James Bond movie.

Right we are now about to become experts in the 5000m long track skating after Peter Michael takes the lead by 0.08 seconds with just a few more pairs (including the world record holder) to skate. Fingers crossed everyone. Live coverage currently on Sky Sport channel 55.
It was a good effort from him. Leading at one stage before the better athletes had their turn. Not sure where he finished up but I think he was guaranteed top six.
4th
That is an awesome effort.
If we can get into finals and get top 10s for 80% of our athletes it will be a top games.
I know very little about our chances in anything other than the freestyle skiing/boarding but with the rest of the programme we are a punchers chance, like CGK last night. There are better competitors but we can be up there to pounce on an opportunity should the chance arise.
I like the new scoring system in the slopestyle though and they can pay off on our scores. Previously you could get someone like Bobby Brown hardly do a thing on the rail section, then get a big score on the back of a triple at the last jump. -

Fuck... the start of someone who had lost concentration.
Or choked.
And yay USA wins yet another gold medal in the Olympics.
Not choked. He was doing the one combination run he had dialed in and doing it smoothly enough on one run to get a decent score. The others ahead of him have better moves and managed to get them right on one run. He got a near top score for the run he did and was hoping others would fail. He simply doesn't have a competition triple cork, which is the difference.
Considering he was our number 2 in the event, that was a top achievement. (Our number one had to pull out with injury) -

Awesome work by Garcia-knight. I know his parents reasonably well and they are great people.
But, fuck me Olympic snowboarding is boring... the same guys hitting the same jumps, all doing variations of the same trick for hours. If they wanted to make it more spectator friendly then more points should be given for originality and style.
The missis wanted to watch and cheer on Carlos, straight after this i put on a selection of DVDs from my collection, for entertainment there’s simply no contest.
The video below is real snowboarding, the olympics is just gymnastics by another name.

@SammyC i watched a bit last night (yay Ch7 have the coverage, so we watch everything with an aussie in it, complete with "haha they fell over, that's a great result for Australia" commentary, where every 46th place finish is applauded) and thought the same thing. All those snowboard runs looked almost the same. The moguls is even worse, those runs are fucking identical. Judged events are so suss.

They're a joke. Citius, Altius, Fortius!

And that's why I'm generally disinterested in the Winter Olympics. Too many events that are either judged or held via time trial. It's just the same thing over and over again, with the athletes separated by tiny margins.
It's why I like the short track speed skating and snowboard cross the most, because they are actually races.

Fuck you Ch7. One channel of coverage. And guess what? An Aussie won a medal. So tonight prime time was all 3 runs from all 3 medallists. 2 interviews with the Aussie. 2 replay montages. And another straight replay. Then the medal ceremony. Fuck you!
Hamish is a fucking piston wristed gibbon

We are quite lucky as we get Eurosport, who are covering everything. The gold medal for whinging is being hotly contested by the Brits as well who are finding plenty to moan about as they are still anonymous on the medal table.
As for NZ, I doubt we will have anyone digging around for our flag until the Para part of the games but expect a good showing. -

One thing that sky does well, big events like this. Over here they have 6 pop up channels running that way you have a selection of events to watch. It’s true half of them are dedicated to curling tho..
-
Either the last WO, or the one before, Foxtel had it, and whacked on 6 pop-up channels, it was awesome. I watched so much, heaps of events i had never paid attention to before.
Apparently if you download the 7 app you can watch different stuff. You motherfuckers. It appears they learned nothing from the crap the copped after their last summer olympics coverage, which was the same fucking thing.
The jingoistic dick-waving of the olympics really grates with me.

I hate judge-scoring events in sports, especially when it involves make-up and hair-dressers, and in my youth I always despised figure skating,. But nowadays the womens competition is my favourite event at the Winter Olympics (and really, one of the very few sports anywhere I’d rather see the sheilas than the guys, who should be playing hockey), the long program especially. After the short program they know the scores they have to make, and collars tighten. It has to be the loneliest & most terrifying four minutes In sports, and if they don’t stick a landing at the front end of that program, there is nowhere to hide, that four minutes can feel like four months and the psychological torture and distress is agonizing (and for the sadist in me, delicious). Terrific drama and the skill is incredible. This year will be a contest between two Rooskies, both quite extraordinary. This Evgenia Medvedeva teenybopper is the best I’ve seen since Michelle Kwan (who famously could never win Olympic gold). Will be fascinating to see if she can replicate what she did in the team contest, which was breathtaking. She jumps with an arm stretched over her head, which is unlike almost any other champion womens skater I’ve seen, it’s an otherwordly technique that mesmerizes.

Never one to leave a bro hanging on his own @Salacious-Crumb , I too will have to exit the closet and come out loud and proud as an avid watcher of women's figure skating for years!
Growing up in Calgary during the late '70's, '80's and leaving for Aus in the early '90's, figure skating was huge and you couldn't help but become enthralled by it.
Like Mr. Crumb, I was never much bothered by the male figure skating as well as the ice dancing (Torville and Dean... meh!). But the women's and pairs have always been enthralling.
Going back to such greats as Kristi Yamaguchi, Michelle Kwan, Midori Ito and my personal favourite, Katarina Witt, a true goddess on earth. The grace and athleticism captures my attention like few other spectacles.
Unfortunately we in Aus are starved of such entertainment with the only relief coming every four years.
Now to just sit back and enjoy... endless replays of Aussies coming mid-pack and continual harping on about the first aboriginal Australian involved in the winter olympics, etc.
Channel 7, worst broadcaster ever!

Perving at figure skaters is gay now?
Must be a Queensland thing.
