Footy World Cup - NZ V Peru
-
FUUUUUUCCKK!!!
-
0-0, we'll take that! No away goal for Peru so we're right in this.
-
@no-quarter Agree, well done lads!
-
0-0??
Sounds riveting..... don't think i will bother watching the replay currently on.
-
The Soccer Blacks didn't lose, unlike the League Blacks tonight which is what I won't be watching a replay of.

I won't watch the league either......

@Baron-Silas-Greenback not the kind of game you'd watch knowing the result. The tension is more "can we ride our luck and pull off a bullshit goal at the end to snatch it against a team ranked 100 places above us". In that sense, it was bloody tense and we came within a couple of inches of doing just that.

That was a cracking game. I enjoyed it and swore like a sailor when Thomas(?) put that half volley wide.
When Wood came on you could immediatly see his class. Time on the ball that others don't have.
Was listening to Trackside this mornign and apparently they knew earlier in week that Wood probably only has 120mins in him so he was never going to start that game but wanted to give him a few minutes and tehn start him in Lima.
Reid and our Goalie were huge.

Pundits and ex-players in Peru don't rate us, with one great labelling us as a "Team of the 80s ". They should beat us but it doesn't hurt that they are heaping more pressure on themselves. We need to keep things tight for as long as possible, trying to turn the game into a war of attrition because the longer the hosts go without getting ahead the more nervous they'll feel

First 20 minutes or so, Peru looked like they were just going to slice the AWs apart but the structure seemed to work well and Peru didn't get much space and didn't have an outstanding individual to scare us. Really missed Wood as NZ aren't good enough to short pass from back to front and lobbing the ball to the midget forwards just saw it come straight back.
Wood did really well when he came on - he is a big unit and cannot be shunted off the ball and is also skilled enough to control it. Lewis is probably the other key player as a goal is needed in Peru, Rojas just doesn't seem strong enough despite some silky skills - and he always looks buggered after an hour. Defence did well to limit the chances and Reid showed why having just one centre back playing at a high level can make a huge difference. Really need him to be able to play 90 minutes in the 2nd leg - West Ham can do without him if necessary!
Enjoyed the game for the tension but not the football.

Do you think we can nick it in Lima? My head and heart are saying yes but I have a strong heart and weak head.

I won't repeat comments about the game but we were at the end with most of the action, (i.e., the early Marinovic save, and the near miss from Thomas at the end). Reid was immense and often ended up defending out wide. Peru was disappointing for their ranking.
I thought the atmosphere was much better than at the Bahrain game, mainly because of the Peruvian fans, who contributed to the occasion. I spoke to a few, and many had flown over from Aust.
It was good to visit the Little Beer Quarter and we ended the night at Hashigo Zake.
The return leg will be tough, but if the All Whites can be in the game at HT anything is possible.

Hashigo Zake always reminds me of the pub in Inglourious Basterds, the one where Michael Fassbenders faux pas essentially fucks up the mission for everyone. Awesome beer selection though, you always leave wishing you'd tried just one more.
This is about as good as it gets in terms of contributing to a football thread from me.
