Thing is, with the gun restrictions, if someone wants to get hold of something, they will get hold of something...so in a country like the US where you can get almost anything.
I always remember some teen posting on Youtube years ago how to make a flamethrower form stuff you can buy at a hardware shop, helped by his ex-Military neighbour. Amongst the posts on his Youtube page was a comment by some nutter about how he could turn the fuel into a napalm type making it harder to put out and therefore increase bodycount!
@bovidae well a senior Lawyer in the US has been sacked for an unsympathetic view of exactly that....

What a fucking c%$t. Sadly, the world has plenty of them, which is f&%king worrying.
My FB feed can be divided by:
GOP friends: We're praying for Nevada (including the 'pray for Nevada' photo)
Democrats: Gun control. Now.
This showed up in my feed, which is fucking scary as fuck if true (it's unilad, so treat it with some caution):
There Have Been 273 Mass Shootings In 275 Days This Year In The US
Incl.
This year alone there have been over 11,600 deaths in the USA, which is almost four times the number of people killed in the September 11 attacks of 2001.
Last year, there were more mass shootings than there were days, with 383 incidents in the year – totalling 15,000 deaths.
It isn’t just adults who suffer from the gun violence in the United States, with an average of 1,297 child deaths in the country on a yearly average.

That's for when the guvmint comes to take your guns away!
Flamethrowers are an idiot's weapon...

TBH it's a pretty good plan if you're not interested in getting away with it; semi auto fired into large crowd from elevated position.

I'm in total agreement about the lunatic US gun culture but I think the gun control ship sailed a long time ago. With hundreds and millions of guns floating around, restrictions will have sfa impact. Some of the areas in the US with the strictest gun control laws have the worst gun violence.
A totally fucked situation.

@Rancid-Schnitzel Nuts! I thought the spoiler was the solving of the problem...

Sorry. It seems to pop up whenever I use my mobile. Fat fingers.

The importance of the 2nd amendment is a hard one to get your head around as an outsider. A lot of it boils down to the importance of both freedom and self responsibility in the American psyche. Their anthem sums it up:
"O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. "
They have the freedom to bear arms but that freedom does come at a cost. The question is are the citizens still brave enough to pay that cost? I think they still are.
Freedom isn't free. And as history has shown us governments can and will become corrupt and fail its people. Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, Communist China, Venezuala and many more. Just because western countries come from British liberalism doesn't mean they are immune to failure, and if the black masked protestors we see at rallys are anything to go by then there are certainly people itching for it.
Whether guns would make a difference if a goverment did become tyrannical, who knows, but it certainly would give pause for thought knowing that the 8th largest army in the world could be the 600,000 hunters in Wisconsin alone.
There is also some evidence which suggests certain crimes are reduced in correlation with higher gun ownership with arguments made that open-carry states have 23% less violent crime as well as drop offs in rape and burglary. Stats are of course easily perverted and it is hard to find articles that don't have a narrative to sell. The idea that gun ownership reduces rape especially makes logical sense. I guess the question becomes how many rapes prevented would justify 1 innocent persons death? You might say zero until you consider what your thoughts might be if the person raped could be a family member.
It certainly is a very different world over there.

The point missing in your post is acknowledgment of the fact America has a violence problem which, when mixed with easy access to firearms, results in an astonishing firearm homicide rate. Seems a hell of a price to pay so your next door neighbour can feel safer about his wife not being raped...
The elephant in the room is they aren't, by any stretch of the imagination, "home of the free".

Gun control would not have stopped this atrocity.
Fully automatic weapons (a machine-gun) like this guy used have been illegal for sale & possession in USA since 1986.
It's funny listening to the American leftist mob stubbornly insist for months that it's impossible to verify how many illegal aliens are in their country so why bother trying to fix the problem givem all amnesty -- then out of the other side of their mouths demand the Feds account-for, round-up and confiscate all 300+ million firearms in the United States. I'll give them marks for chutzpah.
And again, stricter gun control like they have in France would not have prevented this atrocity, any more than strict gun control laws in France stopped the atrocity at Bataclan nightclub in Paris. If you're psychopathic, evil and motivated enough, you'll find a way, even if it's a van filled with fertilizer.

ISIS is trying super-duper extra-hard to convince us that he's was one of their guys.
That's ridiculous.
Or is it...?
-
I'd have to listen to the footage again, but that sounded like a semi-auto to me.
Unfortunately most people don't know the sound of rounds coming at them and it's a shit way to find out once the panic in a large crowd starts.
ISIS are having a lend.
-
Maybe it was a different kind of terrorism.
It's currently all the liberal rage in popular liberal media culture to call good ol' boys "white supremacists" and "Klansmen" and "Nazis."
And part of that conditioning of the leftist brain in contemporary American liberal media culture is the acceptance that it's perfectly okay to punch a "Nazi" and excuse any sort of violence against a "Nazi," and of course everybody who watches American liberal news media knows Putin stole the election and all Trump supporters are Nazis.
Country-music fans are nothing if not Confederate-flag flyin' racist crackers and Trump supporters -- I know this because CNN never ceases to stop telling me -- and here these Nazis were all planning on congregating in a small confined area like fish in a barrel.
Just sayin'...

Semi's go in blasts, three rounds tops before refiring. That's a rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat machine-gun.
-
The first step towards gun control is convincing your populace they don't need guns to be safe. The US with its current divides is going in the opposite direction. Maybe he next time the celebs and sports stars have a platform. ..they should be less divisive.

As an ex-small arms coach and qualified range instructor in the Australian Army, I think I have an idea of what firearms sound like.
As I said, I'd have to listen to it again, not that it changes the outcome. It's quite easy to change most common semis into automatic weapons anyway. The old L1A1 SLR required a matchstick...
[edit]
That's clearly automatic small arms fire ~35 secs in.
-
@salacious-crumb this is 'terrorism' just not in the form people associate it with in recent years.

@gt12 There have been a few articles floating around. Not on a PC at the moment but this brings up the 23% and illustrates some potential problems with the stat. I think the other one that comes up is the lowish crime rate in Texas. It would be really interesting to see a non-partisan analysis of the facts and figures. As others alluded to however even if it is gun ownership the issue, the horse has already bolted.
