In case anyone is wondering, the try scorer - Stacey Waaka - is the sister of All Blacks 7s player Beaudein Waaka (not sure where he's playing NPC).

Kelly Brazier goes over for a try.
Half time: Canada 0 - 29 New Zealand

Things are looking good, but the Black Ferns have to stay focused because Canada is the kind of team that is able to make a come back from this.

    Taranaki.

No way was that 2nd try grounded and the TMO (who sounded like a KIwi) was trying to tell the ref that but something got lost in translation. It won't matter anyway. I was watching without commentary so don't know what was said by Lose and co.

I'm not going to watch the 2nd half live but I was interested to see how the Black Ferns looked against decent opposition. Some nice skills on display with both locks playing well. 1st 5 Subritzky-Nafatali might be built like a prop but she can move.

@Bovidae I also had my doubts about the grounding. Good to see the Black Ferns play well against a good opponent. They need to, because it's going to be a lot more difficult in the finals.

    Cocksedge converts the try: 36 - 0.

Hmm, not sure whether it was really a neck roll. View was blocked, so you couldn't see it well. Another yellow, this time to Blackwell.

Another YC... giving the Canucks maximum opportunity to get back into it.

Very good try to Canada, right under the sticks. How the kicker managed to miss that conversion though ...

Yep - I keep getting taken aback when I see the number 10 printed on a jersey that big.

I know you can't compare, but I find it quite funny that the Black Ferns TH prop scores three tries in one game and that Owen Franks after all those tests, hasn't scored a single try.

Full time: Black Ferns 48 - 5 Canada

Fantastic result. With their points differential (+196), the Black Ferns should finish first. Now, wait and see who finishes 4th.

Just France/Ireland to decide final standings now. Ireland need to win to get a place, they can't beat USA as a loser.
If France win they need a BP win by more than 9 pts to overtake England but it won't matter as they will need to trounce Ireland by 90 if they don't want to be in the 2v3 semi.

Pretty much locked in that it will be NZ v USA and Eng v FR (or FR v Eng) on Sunday

it's possible for Ireland and France to both qualify, if my tie-breaking assumptions are correct.

    1. If Ireland win, and France gain a losing bonus point, Ireland will qualify, and France should qualify as the 4th team, as they're ahead of USA on points differential.
    2. If Ireland win by 8+, then Ireland will qualify, and USA should qualify as the 4th team, with France dropping out.
    3. If France win, then France will qualify, and USA should qualify as the 4th team, with Ireland dropping out.

I heard the Irish had a close win against the French earlier this year, so I wouldn't lock in the Americans yet. In saying that, I don't know if both teams were (are) at full strength for their matches.

Japan is certainly conscious of head-injuries - I think every player bar one is wearing headgear?
