The Auckland comp very tight as usual. Lack of bonus points could cost St Peters despite having most wins so far.

not a great season for Bedes, they also lost to St Thomas a couple of weeks back.

Yup, St Peter's and De La Salle suffering with the lack of bonus points.
St Peter's defence is amazing though.. Still surprised that they lost to Grammar..

MAGS and De La Salle are suffering with injuries (each with 5+ players out) though.. The holidays can't come quick enough for them

@mimic Yes AGS is usually a fixture we get up for as well and have had a fair bit of success over them in recent years. La Salle dropping points against Kelston could prove costly in the end.

Long time lurker first time poster.

Ok im a Northern Hemisphere poster but have spent time in NZ and just thinking through NZ's rugby success and alot of it seems to be down to the 1st iv competition which seems to have grown important than local club rugby it seems.

But how does it work, ok I get that each franchise have their championship i.e. the blues championship is Auckland 1a vs the North Harbour Competition( Whangerei is Northland i suppose)

While the Crusades championship is a league with the top 15 college in the reason.

The other three regions I have no idea.

I know there is an Otago Competition and a Southland competition but it seems that Southland Boys high 1st iv dont even play in the Southland competition?

The Hurricanes competition and the Chiefs competition i dont know how they work, in the Hurricanes I know the wellington comp gets a semifinalist but the super 8 thing, i duno how that works?

Would anyone care to enlighten me on the structure?

    It's complicated.

The Super 8 was formed in 1997 and incorporates the eight boys' high schools from their respective provincial cities of the central North Island.

From north to south that is:
    Tauranga
    Hamilton
    Rotorua
    Gisborne
    New Plymouth
    Napier
    Hastings
    Palmerston North

They play a round robin each year with the top 2 teams meeting in the final. The winner of the Super 8 is not guaranteed to make the top 4 for the nationals though as further games are played to determine the representatives from each region (Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes and South Island). The Super 8 has 4 teams from the Chiefs region and 4 teams from the Hurricanes region. The latter teams will have to play schools from Wellington to decide the Hurricanes winner.

There is also a Central North Island competition which features 10 other schools not in the Super 8.

In the Chiefs region the winners from each province (Counties, Waikato, BOP and Taranaki) will play in SFs and a final with the winner advancing to the Top 4.

@jacktothed10 I believe Whangarei Boys High is the only Northland school in the North Harbour comp, and while the experience might be good, they are getting some heavy beatings, but I also know there a lot of talented kids that go to WBHS who have chosen to not play for the 1st 15 and just play 2nds, or play for a club, or a couple of cases, not play at all.

    Super 8

Just read that Hastings Boys have beaten Hamilton Boys in Hamilton today. Final score was close: 20-16.
The Super 8 Final will be played between the same teams next weekend, but should then be played in Hastings, because they've finished top of the table. Hopefully, the unbeaten streak will continue!

    Nice!

Hmmm, I wonder what time the game is next week? I'll be over home for a few days but will be driving up from Welly and stopping in P-hole Nth on the way. Might have to try get there in time for the game.

@Nepia Usually kick-off is at 12.00pm, but I think it will be televised so the game might be moved to about 2.30pm.

Good game down this way today between St Pats Silverstream and Scots.

Silverstream won all their traditionals this year (first time since J. Leslie and S. Mannix were playing in 1988) so are pretty strong.

Expect this classic Catholic vs Protestant match up again in the Wgtn final in a couple of weeks. The Catholics won it this week 35-22

    Thanks @Number-10.

2017 Hurricanes competition - Schoolboys schedule:

Wed 23/8: challenger match between the Wellington Premiership runner-up (most likely Scots College) and a Hurricanes challenger team (I think that's a school not competing in Well Premiership and Super 8?)

Sat 26/8: semi-final between Wellington Premiership winner (Silverstream) v Super 8 second placed team (that should be Napier?) - to be played in Wellington
Sat 26/8: semi-final between Super 8 first placed team (Hastings) v Wellington Premiership runner-up or the challenger team - to be played in Hastings

    Sat 2/9: Hurricanes Final

NZ Barbarians National 1st XV Championships (Top 4) - Sport & Rugby Institute, Palmerston North
    Fri 8/9 semi-finals
    Sun 10/9 finals

Nelson College still has the Moascar Cup after seeing off Timaru BHS by a point - 21-20.

I gather the top 4 of the UC Championship has also been confirmed, but not their finishing order - Timaru BHS, ChCh BHS, Nelson College, Christs College.

Word on the street is that the final was drawn 12-12..
    Hamilton scored the first try.

@mimic Yeah, posted that in Hawke's Bay school thread. Crazy tiebreaking rule making Hamilton the Super 8 winner, despite finishing 2nd in round robin and not beating Hastings in the Final.
