Bracewell forced to drink drive due to dead cockatoo.... I think we've all been there
New Zealand fast bowler Doug Bracewell blamed the killing of a pet cockatoo by dogs for his decision to drink-drive. The 26-year-old was stopped by police in March, found guilty of a third drink-driving offence, and given 100 hours of community service and a ban. Bracewell's lawyer said this was not about a disregard for road rules but a "genuine concern" for his partner.
"The cockatoo was of some significance to his partner and she was quite distraught," he said.
Lawyer Ron Mansfield told the Hastings District Court that Bracewell had been drinking at a function when his girlfriend called him about the cockatoo incident. Bracewell, who has taken 72 wickets in 27 Tests, had previously said in a statement that he had made a "massive mistake" by driving home. He added: "This was no-one's fault but my own. I'm deeply embarrassed to have let down so many people, be they family, friends, or cricket-lovers."
Judge Bridge Mackintosh, who disqualified the cricketer from driving for a year, said: "This offending in my submissions should be seen as an unfortunate hiccup and something that doesn't reflect the man he has become or the sportsman."
New Zealand Cricket said it would not impose any additional penalty. It added that Bracewell is unlikely to resume his competitive cricket career until early next year as he recovers from a serious leg injury. Bracewell, whose father Brendon and uncle John both played Test cricket for the Kiwis, was previously caught drink-driving in 2008 and 2010.

Bracewell and Jesse Ryder were suspended for a match in 2012 after an altercation in a bar while drinking, following a one-day international against South Africa.

2013, he missed the Test series against England after cutting a foot when he stood on broken glass while cleaning up after a party at his house.

So he's half-cut at the pub, the car's outside, and the Mrs calls up bawling her eyes out and totally falling apart because the dogs they're petsitting have mauled the family pet. It can never excuse drink driving, but it's understandable why he didn't stop to think about other options and just jumped in the car and drove home.

Yep, the first time drink driving may have been with a good excuse.
Probably not the second time, though,it's wearing a bit thin.
The third time there's another good reason, you wonder how much it takes to learn, and how everyone else manages to sort out their lives without getting behind the wheel of a car after a few beers. Clearly an unlucky guy

@nzzp ...and that he's had two or three other alcohol-related run-ins - the cut foot and drinking with Ryder outside curfew..and I've got a feeling a third one, as well.
He's a serial offender and I believe elite sports teams are better off without them. I wouldn't be overly surprised if we didn't see him in the Black Caps again.

Didn't learn anything in that game that made the selection conundrum any easier.
The two guys who I was on the verge of replacing in my selection - Ronchi and Neesham - were the two who stood up in this game - including Neesham looks like he bowled well.
To be honest, it won't surprise me if they opt to go with Ronchi over Latham.
Champions Trophy is sort of a go big or go home tournament. Playing the "safe" options probably won't get it done for us.

Last warm-up game was against Sri Lanka last night. An absolute run-fest in which we chased down 356 with four overs to spare.
Guppy made an unbeaten hundred (retired) , Kane 88* (retired) and Anderson 50*, so all those guys should have garnered some confidence and form. Broom and Latham also made useful contributions and only Rossco missed out. I guess he made three half centuries in the Ireland/Bangladesh series - though without ever looking at his very best, I thought.
We were allowed heaps of bowlers (nine) and they all got hit around a bit, but Anderson and Santner were the most economical. Boult went for 27 runs off his opening two overs, which set the tone a bit for the day.
Champions Trophy starts tonight, with England vs Bangladesh and then we start against Australia tomorrow night, with our second game against England on Tuesday night. Barring rain disrupting the group, we pretty much have to win one of those games or we're on the plane home.
The Aussies are the Aussies and England are the bookies favourites to win and have basically taken a leaf out of McCullum's "When in doubt, attack" book - so I'm inclined to fight fire with fire - especially if the pitches are flat.
The Aussies pretty much sorted Tommy Latham out in recent matches, so I'm going to say send Ronchi in to swing away and hope. Before we left, Hesson reckoned he wouldn't play the three allrounders (Anderson/Neesham/Santner) together, but I reckon that's what needs to happen (unless he decides to put CdGh in for Neesham). We will need some help from Lady Luck I reckon, but it will help if we put ourselves in her path.

Great to see Guppy continuing his form from the T20s - he and Kane are absolutely critical to our chances. This really is anyone's tournament, SA-England showed how easily it can swing from one team to the other depending on who fires on the day - a lot of evenly matched teams so we're in with a shout if things go our way.

I see the SL game was at Edgbaston, as well - on that evidence home ground advantage might not save Jeets from the tonk. However, we'd need some pretty favourable conditions to give our seam attack an advantage over the Aussies, so there might be merit in playing two spinners.
The poms have tried for a psychological advantage by scheduling our match against them in Cardiff!

You mean trying to make us complacent, as the last NZ team to play a knockout match tin Cardiff won 62-13?
