Very good effort by George.
Not sure I'd rank it above a track cycling gold, Hydro. I think there's more than 30 races of this level or above each year compared to a handful of track medals given out every four years.
Though in my mind road cycling is more prestigious.
Looking at the list of past winners, this surely catapults George into the elite level of road cyclists, though.

It depends how you value it. From what I can see, many of the best road cycling countries in the world couldn't care less about track cycling. Spain, Colombia and France only won one medal on the track between them in 2016 and that was a bronze. It doesn't seem that most of the best cycling countries actually devote a lot of resources into track cycling.
I would rather come 10th at the Vuelta (which George did last year) above a track gold as well. Most people in New Zealand would take the gold but I don't think that sentiment is widely shared in Europe where cycling is most popular.
