No, no, no. They only ever play well for a short period and will still manage to lose from a position of strength. I realise that you know that, but it is silly to suggest that they won't lose this.

@Virgil Yeah - I was thinking Boonie should get down to the SA dressing room at tea and issue a "Grow up, son".
Unfortunately for Jeet, he got almost completely becalmed.
He got to 75 after 200 balls. He scored 5 off Elgar's rubbish over. Hit Rabada for a four and otherwise scored four runs off 50 balls to conclude his innings.
Kane will need to go a fair way further, I think, for us to reach a position of strength. Ideally, we'd aim to bat till tea, tomorrow - but, I can't see that happening now that Broom and Nicholls have gone cheaply.

I think this might be one of those pitches where attacking and getting a big lead might not be possible. Seems like no-one but Kane has been able to score very freely.
I think they'll be aiming to bat until tea. Grind on until an hour after lunch and then try to attack for 45 minutes to an hour and end up with a lead of something around 200 (maybe a bit more) and four sessions at the Jaapies.

@ACT-Crusader Yeah - it doesn't look hard to survive on, but it seems like if you bowl tightly it's not easy to score on. Jaapies seemed to be able to tie Raval in knots and similarly Santner. Even Kane isn't going at a rollicking pace.
If we can get 100 ahead before we lose a wicket, I might be inclined to promote CdGh ahead of BJ and see if he can advance the game.
The worry I have is that if Kane gets out, we might be all out for about 50 runs from then, without a lead big enough to really have the Jaapies in a vice.
Edit: and while I've been typing that Kane's got out.

....)I think you just sort of wait and see at the end of his career.
The gear these guys have these days is so much better than in the past that I think you have to measure how much better they are than their contemporaries, when trying to compare against Bradman (working against that is that in these professional days I find it hard to believe anyone could consistently average 40 runs better than the next best - there's too few places to build a margin) and people like Viv Richards and even Tendulkar and Lara.
Smith is certainly a cut above his teammates, but in his era people like Voges and Handscombe have also constructed hugely impressive averages.
Interesting thing in Kane vs Smith is that Kane is a year younger and only three hundreds behind. He started quite a bit younger for NZ, as a less complete batsman, so his average is probably compromised a bit by that.
In terms of career hundreds - if NZ continues to play a solid test schedule and if Kane remains hungry, he will probably end up playing on after Smith retires (NZ having less playing resources), so might end up with more hundreds, but probably a lower average.
