@hydro11 Unfortunately, a similar sort of case could have been made against anyone we picked who then happened to score 0. If we'd picked Bruce, for instance, we'd be saying you can't expect a young guy on debut to step up against perhaps the world's best attack...

One big plus with Broom is that, whatever happens, we won't have damaged him for a decade of future international cricket.

    Some harsh judging there @Mokey

    http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/batting/most_runs_career.html?class=1;id=2017;type=year

Going into this innings Kane was averaging 73 in 2017 (i.e. recently). Latham 64 and Nicholls 66.

All of them better than Raval 29 and Watling 33.

To be fair this South African side did pump the Aussies with 2 easy test wins in OZ only 5 or 6 months ago.

I'm not watching right now but I think Nicholls will be in the team for a fair while. He gives me the impression that he probably doesn't have the all round game to excel but he's good enough to exist as a test cricketer. He might average 35 or something. He has played enough good innings that he should be persisted with.

@Virgil I don't think there's actually that much between the side the Jaaps are fielding and our top team (i.e. with Taylor and Boult in the line-up). Especially with Philander and Morkel both a bit down on their ideal pace.

Balance changes a bit if ABdV and Steyn come back into the mix.

It has been very disappointing to lose two wickets to the spinner once the early life went out of the pitch and the ball.

    @hydro11 He's playing well today.

We don't have so many riches that we can afford to discard someone who has just scored his fifth half century in 19 test innings - two against the Jaapies and one against Oz (plus two vs the Bangles).

I'm really hoping he can rack up a big score and cement his place for a while - and then carry on over the next 12 months to prove he's the man for the job.

I think it would be good to see your man, Bruce get some chances at 5 in some ODIs and find his feet that way.

Edit: harsh reality is that we'll probably need to find a replacement for Rossco in the next couple of years.

@Chris-B. Latham's average is wildly blown out because of the 177. In his other 5 innings this year he scored 143.

@Mokey That's how it works though. Get a good score to tide you over when you fail. 🙂

Well done Henry Nichols i have been a little critical of you in the past but that was a quality century and virtually chance-less till you got to the late 90s but unlike last time you made it.

Well deserved century this time and sealed your place at 5 for a long time cause this is a good bowling attack and the others looked clueless, Watling is still struggling although valiantly.

Henry's got his test average up to 37 now and the good news is that he jumps it a run with every 16 he scores. A chance to get things looking pretty respectable if he can go on with it here.

@Bovidae said in NZ v SA Test Series:

Shit, I go out for an hour and we lose 3 wickets. We could have written Latham's mode of dismissal before he took guard.

Although I desperately wanted Broom to succeed I'm not surprised he's gone early. Time for Nicholls to stand up (hoping I'm not putting the mockers on him).

    Any other predictions needed? 😁

@Bovidae Quite a few now that Nicholls and CdGh have departed in quick succession.

Just when we were getting back in the game - SA two wickets ahead of par and our tail looks frail.

Aarggh - and now BJ gets an incredibly unlucky caught behind.

He's down on one knee sweeping - gets a bottom edge onto his front pad, which instead of then bouncing harmlessly on the ground, bounces on the flap of his back leg pad and is caught.

So the ball bounces on both pads and not the ground.

268 all out. Not bad considering I thought they would be all out for 100 this morning.
