I would think that the biggest work-on for Guptill batting at 5 will be his ability to play spin and rotate the strike. He always looks much more comfortable against pace bowling with the ball coming onto the bat but struggles and remains crease-bound against slower bowlers. While he played Tahir well in Hamilton different field settings and pitch conditions in a test will dictate he will need to be more measured in his approach.

That said, I hope he gets an opportunity to prove he can make that transition.

Great thinking bringing Patel back with all his experience.

    Experience being shit that is.

Guess the line-up will look like this: Jeet Raval, Tom Latham, Kane Williamson (c), Ross Taylor, Colin de Grandhomme, Jimmy Neesham (or Nicholls if they wish to persist), BJ Watling, Mitchell Santner, Neil Wagner, Tim Southee, Trent Boult

Really would like Guptill to be tried at five in the future but Champions Trophy is the priority this year.

it is good to send Guptil back to plunder the Plunket Shield bowling attacks to see if he is able to step up at International level.

@Sneakdefreak I'm expecting Nicholls at 5 and CdGh at 6.

The batting looks pretty frail to me and would likely be even worse if Jeetan got a run (unless they left out Southee).

I wouldn't be surprised if Neesham is picked ahead of CdG to strengthen the batting. Would Hesson have the balls to leave out Southee? Certainly, Wagner has been the best bowler in recent tests so his place should be secure.

It's probably what I would do, but Hesson seems to be pretty consistent in his selections and doesn't seem to be of the (my) opinion that CdGh just got lucky with that 6 wicket bag.

I've got a feeling Timmy is one of the first names written down on the teamsheet. 🙂

Chris Gayle and Virhender Sehwag did alot of the above ( that Guptil does ), opened, and averaged 42 and 49 in test cricket respectively.

Virendar Sewag is one of the greatest back foot cutters of a ball ever to play the game. He's core shot is the square cut. He was also fantastic off his hip. He's a mile from Guppy.

The gold standard is still Mark Waugh.

Just making the point that both of them supposedly didn't have the 'technique' for test cricket....

Never mind Mark Waugh or Virender Sehwag... It's how that flawed technique of Guptill's compares to Henry Nicholls that I'm worried about.

With Rabada and Steyn I'd lean towards shoe-horning in the best six batsmen in NZ and then doing a rain dance 🙂
