Call to Arms (and Stomachs)

OK...I need to do this as well. Current weight 112kg, target weight by September when I go back to NZ is double figures. My key measure won't be weight, but I would like to fit into a 36in waist, currently 40in waist. Went to the gym last night, 45 minutes on the Orbital thingee, calories burned 537, Saturday went for a 30 minute walk with my wife. My key challenge will be my diet and ensuring that I eat regularly.

Guys, am very impressed that ye are all making such an effort to lose weight and get. Your ideas are bril, but as any female will tell you, if you make drastic changes to your life its very hard to maintain them longterm. Start small, throw away the frying pan, stay well clear of bread , drink spirits/wine instead of beer and move your backside more!! Housework is great for burning calories boys!!! Just remember, that if your exercising a lot, you will probably put on weight, so judge it on how your clothes fit. Am a female rugby player and we smack in the middle of our season up here, have never been as fit but am heavier than i've been in a long time.Will follow your progress with interest.....be strong!!!!

Waaaaay ahead of you, boys.<br />
<br />
Started a 1-year diet on January 1, 2006.<br />
<br />
Height: 180cms<br />
Age: 37 yrs<br />
<br />
Was: 97 kgs<br />
Am now: 89 kgs<br />
Target: 81 kgs (playing weight)<br />
<br />
Method:<br />
<br />
You're not going to like this, but, rule number one is no alcohol. But I was drinking about a six-pack a night, so if you aren't, then maybe this isn't so important.<br />
<br />
Rule number two is to make a bet with one of your mates, or all of the Fern, about whose going to lose more weight. Non-financial bets that involve pain and/or humiliation are best.<br />
<br />
Rule number three is ignore all the bloody stupid diets out there, stick with the current best science and just reduce your total kilojoule intake slightly (5% - 10%). If you seriously do this, and try to get that 10% especially from fatty foods, you will lose weight.<br />
<br />
Rule number four is moderate exercise. Don't jump into a program that you can't sustain. Take it easy, try to do something every day - quick walk or 20 sit ups / push ups plus a weekly game of touch footy or squash or whatever.<br />
<br />
Anyway, that's what I reckon. -
Mods - ban him for negative comment <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Watch it matey, or you'll have a whole heap of extra time to exercise due to being banned!! -
Oddly I think I have the power but not (presently) the inclination <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /><br />

<br />
Actually MvJ, I could stand to lose a couple of kilos, might join in too -
I'm gonna contribute to this weight goal setting.<br />
<br />
Current weight: 76 kg (6ft tall)<br />
Goal weight in 3 weeks: 78 kg.<br />
<br />
You see, I have been travelling in asia recently and lost almost 10kg in 10 weeks even including eating and drinking more than I would at home. I have a very heavy fortnight of drinking coming up with O'week so if I can only gain 2 kg then it will be a huge success. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /><br />
<br />
Exercise regimen: couple of push ups and chin ups here or there, plus rugby training once or twice a week.<br />
<br />
Diet: stop drinking... yea right. cut out the soft drinks maybe a option. (just add a shot of whiskey to every glass of coke?). -

Housework?? I'm sure sex burns more calories :nta
<br />
Theres always one with their mind in the gutter!!! Yes, sex burns lots of calories but don't want you lot keeling over with heart attacks if you're as overweight and unfit as you seem!!!!! -

<br />
How quaintly victorian in attitude, to consider the idea of sex as to 'In the gutter' -
I don't know about being unfit now. I for one might be a fat front-row but I'm very fast over 10 meters, even considered a speed merchant in some circles.<br />
<br />
What does this have to do with sex I hear you ask?<br />
<br />
Nothing.<br />
<br />
Although a 10m head start can be pretty useful when you're stuck in a bad blind date. -

Not gonna help though if she's got the stamina to wait 'til your pace drops off then take you (apply whichever connotations seem best to the last part of that sentence) -
Well, if she still goes after me after seeing me run out of the pub screaming like a girl and collapsing on the pavement like a beached walrus after just 10m then maybe she's earned her 2.5mns of Pdp lovin'.

Probably the best adice yet - just start slow and work into it - no matter how hard out you feel like going, and important to have a day off both working out and eating right - a junk day all round. But start slow, baby steps, and work your way into it.Like DR, but even further back, I started this January 2005, and have lost the kilo a month pretty much down to pretty muhc playing weight. So baby steps, baby steps... -
I love that running / sprinting routine you've got nutted out there Red Bull. That is going to be modified by MvJ for his own purposes! I have the same issues with long runs-- sore shins-- but also cronic boredom. Quite like sprints though, so a mixure is the obvious idea. So obvious I never bloody thought about it until now
<br />
<br />
glad I could be of assistance to you Uncle Miller. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Your inspirational thread has really invoked some spirit and determination amongst the Ferners, so well done there mate.<br />
<br />
I must say though that last nights 1 hr 20 min touch footy game saw me disturbingly lethargic and lacking spark for the first half hour, but as the game wore on, the pace and energy I've been striving to develop gradually returned. Don't know why it took so long, cos I didn't have a big weekend or anything? :nta -
ok I will join in;<br />
aim to move down from a comfortable 89Kg to 80, but 85 is probably more realistic :nta -

Anaerobic versus aerobic. I get a similar thing on the bike as my regular track after a bit of flat work (2km) goes upwards for about the next 3km and I feel like I'm going to die. I'm not sure exactly how it works but in layman's terms you start off using the grunt in your muscles, because its the most efficient way to get short-term use out of them. Then when your body realises you're serious about this and aren't going to stop, it forces you to breathe deeply, which is why you get puffed. Its trying to recover oxygen to get out to the muscles. Then after a lot of huffing you break through the balance of anaerobic versus aerobic and your breathing essentially keeps up with your muscles' demands for oxygen (saturation point). its also called "second wind".
