I fuckin' hate Toulon/Mourad Boudjellal
Except this ends up hurting France more than it hurts NZ.
Have you seen their team to play England?
-
@Frye That may be so, but that's hardly my only reason for disliking this kind of "news". I prefer our players to play for NZ teams and I'd like to be able to watch them play! Top 14 games are at inconvenient hours for us and not televised by Sky (or anyone else).
-
is the player exodus any worse than it has been?
-
The tweeter is going way over the top there.
What would be disruptive to NZ rugby is if they started throwing big bucks and long contracts at the best young players in NZ. We aren't talking Carter level money, but next tier down - Gitteau/Sexton/Parra.
If they blindly gave the Age Grade Player of the year a long contract at big bucks the past few years you are looking at guys like Sam Cane, Akira Ioane, Jordie Barrett, Ardie Savea, Damian MacKenzie. At least you have them making a big decision before they are even capped as ABs.
The black jersey is a valuable bargaining chip, but as we know from the league raids in the 90's perhaps not as much as you think.
All those players I'm happy for them to take all three, just clears the decks for next crop - although with Fekitoa I have some pause. Nonu was rumoured to be switching to league and signing with Wests around the 2007 RWC - general consensus on here was that it wouldn't be a huge loss to NZ rugby and he was a bit of a bust at test level.

Story talks about the global season, eligibility and that Dagg looks like staying...
-
Not yet confirmed: Callum Gibbins to Glasgow Warriors

Steven Luatua strongly rumoured to be joining Pat Lam's Bristol for next season.
One player who has never delivered on the promise his breakout season suggested. I would not be surprised to see him move overseas, especially if he remains no more than a fringe AB. He has the physical attributes to entice overseas clubs to part with their money.

Luatua:
Also strong signals that Izzy Dagg will stay in NZ. Announcement in the next few days.
I'd be surprised if Dagg left now. The journalists with strong ties to the ABs (the likes of Gregor Paul etc) have all been basically saying that Dagg is staying.
-
-
I wonder if Luatua will have a clause in his Bristol contract to play elsewhere for a season if Bristol are relegated to the Championship for next season.
Currently Bristol are bottom of the English Premiership and in a fascinating battle with Worcester to avoid the chop.

Not happy with that
Look I'm not happy with Pat Lam being employed as a coach after his abortion of a run at the Blues either, but you can't begrudge a guy forever.
As for Luatua never really saw him as a big time test player, poor mans Vito. Useful member of the Blues when fit though.
-
I think Luatua ended up in a rough situation. He got his chance initially and did quite well (as well as any of the recent additions anyway). When he turned up the following year not fit enough and off the pace he was rightly dropped and learned a big lesson. Since then he has knuckled down and probably done everything wanted of him. If you ignored all previous he would have been a strong contender.
However just as Hansen has shown he sticks with established players through and through, he has also shown that if someone isn't established and trips up he tends to look elsewhere and the second chances don't come.
Name me the players that have been dropped then come back strong under Hansen. Apart from the odd one game rev up there aren't many.
I think Luatua is a bloody good player and we would miss him depth wise. -
Big loss especially for the Blues if true. The man was outstanding last season. Poor mans Vito lol has Canes4Life found his way back

Dagg came back when few expected him to. Peranara got sent away and came back better for it. Dane Coles was dropped back to Wellington in 2013.
