It's definitely dull. No bite from the malt or hops. A friend in the NZ beer industry told me that it become much more so since Emmersons was acquired. I hadn't tried it prior to that.
On the other hand, I enjoy Tuatara's Pilsner, but the hops are into US IPA territory.

I think your friend may be talking tripe. Richard Emerson is still in charge down there and the recipes haven't changed nor has the brewing process. Lion's investment has simply meant larger production facilities and more output.
The only difference I can think is that kegged Emerson's is now more accessible and the fresh draught version is likely to taste different to the bottled.
It's a matter of taste obviously but the is a general consensus on this beer that differs to yours and given that it is hardly ever 'hyped' I tend to think its rating is deserved. There is a fairly large contingent of beer snobs in NZ that have decided that Emersons and Panhead somehow became worse simply because the ownership of their shares changed to a multinational.
My only reservation with the increase in production is the availability in bars on keg that probably don't take quite the same care with their delivery systems as a smaller boutique bars does and that there are now more often two slightly different versions around from the same recipe. One being bottled, one being keeged. -

Steinlager is the surprise in the list but then they make a good argument. I suspect it is more an attempt to try and show the list makers aren't being beer snobs though.
Joe Wood (liberty brewing) is a bit of a steinlager fan I understand. One trick he plays is to blind taste Steinlager to people in tastings, and people often enjoy it as a clean, bitter lager, and then let them know what it is.
I, of course, have been drinking from classy green bottles since soon after Hadlee retired.

I always enjoyed reading Donaldson's articles in the SST. These lists are obviously his opinion but it's a good opportunity to try different beers based on recommendations. Pretty much all the breweries he has talked up in these articles have a beer in his top 10. Excluding Steinlager I've tried 7 of them myself prior to this list.
I sampled Gunnamatta at a beer tasting evening a few years back and didn't like it at all - not an Earl Grey tea fan.

Don't bother with it. Its just a poor quality photo to show I did succumb and buy a Williams Warne kegerator

I can't remember any of the names but the APA in particular was wonderful.
Good effort, I'll make sure I try that one

I'm a big fan of Belgian beer. Can't wait for another visit to Cafe Leuven in Wellington to enjoy a Westmalle Double.
Leuven do a really good cherry flavoured one too. Always have one when I'm there.

Ha! I am currently sitting in a hotel in southern Belgium on a stopover and just realised that the Leffe museum is here, Chimay and Maredsous breweries are both within 10 kms.
Unfortunately none of them open until too late in the morning and we have to get to Calais in time for our ferry.
Compromise has been to sample a few from the bar downstairs (a very nice Maredsous Brune) take off early and go via Bruge with time for a quick lunch and a few glasses. -

Yep. Just had 7 days on German/Austrian beer and its difficult to find much above average. Looking forward to grabbing some kiwi beer for tonight to watch the fireworks from the top of NZ house in London.

Was out on Friday and had a few Macs Mid Vicious Session IPA, which is 2.5%.
Gotta say, pretty good, hands down the best low alcohol beer I have had.
-
TR I had some at Akl Airport wee hours of Sunday morning and I agree. It actually tasted like beer!
I was seeing my brother off after a 16 day drinking binge.
I never want to look at a beer again - well not until at least 6.00 pm

Their raspberry one is decent for what it is. Definitely a good option for this time of year.
