@dogmeat said in Quay Park stadium for Auckland?:

not tried to get from bus station. I based my assertion on @Kirwan saying it was easy as to get there during RWC 2011 having previously seemed to think Albany was somewhere north of Wellsford. I just mapped it and it's 1.17 km so 15 minute walk? So about the same as the walk from Twickenham Station to the ground.

Confused, the Albany dig directed at me? I grew up by Glenfield and later Whangarei, so kinda know where Albany (and Wellsford, mores the pity) is.

So why aren't you supporting the (not so) mighty Harbour?

Wasn't really intended as a dig. I remember you thinking Albany would be a ball ache to get to and later saying it was a breeze, so I used you as an ikon for the widely held view that getting to North Harbour Stadium is akin to early 20th century attempts to reach the South Pole

Because I started supporting Auckland in 1984 before Harbour existing. Fucking splitters.

I got stuck in a car park after a game in Albany for an hour. It sucked. Eden Park is a breeze in comparison.

A soccer stadium at Western Springs would work.

I wonder if the first half of the NPC could be moved there too?

Pretty good summary of the two akl main stadium options with, unsurprisingly, major funding concerns and a lack of substance to Quay Park

    Stadium Unfeasibility - Greater Auckland

Tomorrow Auckland’s Councillors will decide on the next steps in the city’s ongoing stadium debate, and it appears one option is technically feasible but isn’t financially feasible while the other one might be financially feasible but not be technically feasible. … Continued

@dogmeat the retractable seating on the lower North stand of EP is a good improvement for cricket

Yeah I reckon it will go status quo, with slow incremental improvements. There's no money out there now unless we sell ourselves to the Saudis or something

@antipodean Which? The slow improvement is status quo, it was mentioned in one article that is the 'do nothing' answer. But how long these immprovements take to be actioned at EP who knows - EP 2.1 can be done in stages.

Given the two options available it seems the right choice

I like the sound of the retractable seating idea but the proof will be in the pudding

Wow, so they opted for the half in / half out option .... what a surprise ...

Not been to EP since 2017, but found it reasonably accessible both in and out. Trains were crammed, but nothing new there.

Doesn't look like my dream it being a proper rugby/football stadium with cricket played elsewhere will ever come to fruition though as I assume thats what the retractable seating is all about?

The seating at the base of the North stand is at a low gradient. Making it retractable gives back a lot of room.

Personally I'm glad one of Eden Park, Athletic Park, Lancaster Park and Carisbrook will continue to exist. We've lost a lot of history

@Duluth Thats a decent proposition but reality is that if you are in that stand above the lower seats you are still a long way from the action. I don't know how many seats are in that part, but lets suggest it's 5k, do we really need a 45k seater for cricket?

    Totally agree your second point.

    @MajorRage

I think the lower North stand is a bad place to watch from. But height improves things.

It looks like the the area you're talking about is just below the current North lounge seating. The view from there is good.. not as good as the other side but still decent (I think I've watched 100+ games from there)

I don't think it's retractable, but they do put in temporary - I think!
