Aumua just had to throw it in straight. A lucky escape

I thought Canes might have taken 3 instead of gone for the line

Lack of a decent kicker? Made sense, at least we would have forced them under the posts

How the fuck did they not get penalized for that head high, that was deadset coat hanger. Woeful from the ref, touchies and TMO. Unreal actually.

Good game overall. Well done to the canes. Need to retain ball a lot better. On to next week

Didn't the comms say the ref missed it so the TMO couldn't intervene? Back in the old days the touchie would have raised his flag

That sucked. Good game of rugby though. A lot of should haves...

Landers created plenty of opportunities , some poor options, pushed passes etc.... cost them

I thought they looked devoid of solutions towards the end. No clear pattern of play. Slow ball from rucks to forwards standing still.

Didn't take the option to attempt a drop goal when they were in a better position, and like McAlister went for a hail mary miles out.

I find the lack of first phase strike play from the backline concerning for the highlanders. At lot of it was static and lacked go forward outside of the individual efforts of a few players. We don’t offer any uncertainty to opposition defense

    Oh wow, Tangitau

I though Love had been doing sprint training?

Taumoefolau ran past him last week too.

The loss is what it is. It was a good tough game. We should have knocked that penalty into touch from Faleafaga. We should have knocked that penalty over from Gilbert. We should have got that penalty for the high tackle. We didn't.

We are a good team. That wa s tough game. Played at a high pace. Either team could have walked away with four points and the other with one.

That was a nerve racking game. I always thought the Highlanders were going to win, just used to the Canes losing lately I guess.
Highlight of the game for me was the Love - zoo interaction.
Not a lot of creativity in this game but disciplined defenses and a lot of turnover penalties.
I think the Canes season would have been over if we lost. So it’s good to keep the comp alive.

If this is how you react for Blackadder I shudder to think at how you react to criticism of Southland players

Just finished catching up. I feel for the Landers in that last few minutes, jeez that was a shocking miss by the refs, definitely should have been a penalty at the very least in regard to that high shot from Umaga-Jensen.

Happy to get the result after a pretty gutsy effort on defence, lead by Kirifi. Now let's get Proctor, Higgins, Cashmore etc back after the bye and hopefully get some momentum going in this competition.

How good is Tangitau though? An AB in waiting that's for sure. I definitely judged him too soon on the back of a pretty poor NPC so I hold my hand up on that. He's a star and has a very high work-rate which you want in your wingers.

Isn't Love a decent goal kicker?

    Is Roigard kicking?

Roigard doesn't kick. He simply orders the ball to make contact with his foot.

Yes. The Highlanders needed to have more variation at the end. If the tactic is to play narrow then there shouldn't be any excuse for not having cleaners at the ruck.

Speaking of high tackles, there is no consistency. de Groot had Gallagher in a headlock near his own goal line in the 1st half and Mabey wasn't interested either.

On reflection. This close out showed the lack of a bench we have. Modern rugby requires the ability to lift tempo. Apart from a few players we weren't able to do that. Especially in the backs.

Lasaqa, Bartlett, Vikena were great impact off the pine.

I just feel when we can get to a point where our bench, in the backs offer Fakatava, Hurley, Howden, that can offer fam breakers.

That’s got to be the last time Gilbert plays 15 for the Highlanders. Tried to convince myself, but he is too slow.

With JRK coming back and Hurley improving, might be one of the last times he plays for the highlanders, or is that wishful thinking?
