Report: NZR facing big revenue drop as Rugby Australia finally on the up
NZRU are reportedly facing the prospect of a significant revenue drop on their next broadcasting deal.
So according to this article and Gregor Paul (who I'm wary of taking at face value these days due to some of the bullshit he's come up with in his league v rugby articles in the past couple of years) the next broadcasting deal is going to be reduced significantly.
If true, I wonder if this is a time where NZR actually plays hard ball. I know there is league overhype at the moment, but realistically the main driver of subscriptions to Sky Sport is rugby. No other single sport, including league, would bring in the same amount of subscribers.
I think NZR could try and get Prime interested in funding the rugby. They have much fewer subscribers in NZ than the other streamers so grabbing the rugby could be the best way for them to increase their market share.
At the very least, by talking to other options NZR can put pressure on Sky for a better deal.
Or am I just completely out of touch and the issue is that Sky has a monopoly on the outside broadcasting, and/or NZR and Sky are too entwined with the ownership stake from a previous deal to be split apart?

Sky sold the OBUs to NEP back in 2020. They paid overs for the last rugby broadcasting rights.
The fact that Spark Sport no longer exists shows how hard it is to be a viable and profitable business delivering live and ad-free sport in NZ with a small population base. I've never even bothered to subscribe to NZR+, so no idea what the uptake is for that platform.

doesnt Sky own Prime?...maybe im wrong or its changed since i left NZ
personally i kind of feel NZR needs to buckle up for some pain...but for long term gain, take less money but with a free to air, couple of games a week free kind of deal...but then make a really cheap streaming service for those of us you want to watch all our teams games...try and make watching rugby even more common...and get a big deal a few years down the track.....getting less money but still having it stuck behind an expensive subscription.....i think is just going to piss people off

Do you think the lack of Spark Sport will impact the next NRL deal as well? Surely if they paid overs for the rugby then they also paid overs for the NRL?
I thought NZR+ was mostly just for outside of NZ?

I would subscribe to whoever had rugby. Only thing you don't want is it being split. Was in Wales on holiday just before xmas and one man in the pub where we watching a game reckoned he would have to pay 90 pound ($260) a month to watch all rugby with teams his team/s were involved in!

agree with @antipodean, would be very happy seeing i already have AMAZON Prime, would even pay a small top up like i currently do for STAN

TBF, when I mentioned Prime I was only thinking NZ rights, I think Stan are locking up the rights here in Oz.
But, I'm with you both, I'd like it on Prime - would make that streamer less annoying (impossible to find anything, half the stuff is selling other channels etc) if I had guaranteed NZ rugby.

I think they were hoping plenty of NZ-based people would sign up too as there is content not available anywhere else.
This seems like a Silver Lake initiative which you could eventually turn into a PPV platform to show live games.

Curiously who else wants to buy it? Has anyone else tabled a serious offer? Wonder if the offer was linked to rugby rankings (as winners tend to get more viewers). Also was SA still playing Super in previous contract?

There in lies the problem, noone else can afford it. Theyt not set up for streaming live sport etc, so be costs involved, and getting everything set up would probably cost a few $s.

Well it was always going to be the case really, Sky would have over-paid for the last deal to ensure that they get the broadcasting rights as their own business model would die if they don't have the rugby (and I believe they'd already lost the cricket to Spark sport?)
Now that Spark sport is dead Sky can do the right thing by their sharholders and squeeze the price on the deal, as we have noted - it's not like theres anyone else fighting for the rights atm?

NZ rugby investing in the infrastructure to broadcast from the major grounds would be an interesting move...so new broadcast partners had lower overhead to get their foot in the door...might drum up a little more competition

We really only have three or four stadiums that need the infrastructure and two of those will be indoors. If we fuck off the Caketin and Dunedin then it is two…
