To be fair, you're probably right. But he came across as a bit of knob, and the DRS efforts were meme-worthy. But he was a hell of a cricketer.

Four hundreds and three five fors in 59 tests. Colin De Grandhomme had better averages.
He was a decent cricketer, nothing more.

Watson was one of the most overrated test players ever
Hard disagree. I think he was actually underrated.
In Australia he was a punchline who was never truly appreciated. An opener who could generally get past the new ball and average 40 odd? We yearn for that.
Now all he’s remembered for is reviewing the odd plumb LB. Not his supreme eye and ability to shore up our batting lineup in a relatively unstable period.
And then you have his bowling ability, which again was underrated. Despite injury limitations he was the perfect fifth option who could tie down an end while the quicks had a rest.
And then in the shorter forms he was a master.
I’m not saying he’s an all time great but in Australia I don’t think he has the respect he deserves.
Are we thinking of the same guy ?
From 2009-2014 he scored a bit over 3,000 runs at 39.6. So not quite 40 but not too shabby given our record in that period.

We would have killed for him, but he could barely get a game for Oz.

Stuart Law great bloke he played for my club over here he arrived home from a tour from England at 8am on a Saturday, turned up to play for the club starting at 10am and smashed a great 150 I was lucky enough to be in that side that year as a young pup,awesome to watch he was a real club man.
He had a vicious cover drive did Lawry. -
