2023 School Rugby
-
@Bovidae It happens everywhere, unfortunately. For us in HB, the Highlanders are the worst, but Blues scouts have been at our school games as well this year and we've lost a few players to the Crusaders region in recent years, too. Several of our recent school leavers have been playing club rugby in Otago this year, and at least 3 of them are now in the Otago U19 squad. There's at least one in the Canterbury U19 squad. I haven't looked at other U19 and development squads, but I might find a few more. It's frustrating, but I lay some of the blame with the Hurricanes, too. Players know very well that the Hurricanes always look at Wellington players first & they may think they have a better chance at making it down South because of that.

Palmerston North BHS v Southland BHS
Whakaata Māori only seem to be streaming two of the four semi-finals, unless they still have to post the other two:
-
I did read that they might not be showing all SFs live. I don't know if that is due to moving to CET Arena this year, and obviously games 2 and 3 overlap. A pity, if true, as the other SFs would be more interesting.
-
Hopefully there is some coverage somewhere of the Westlake semi
-
Westlake game will be available to watch live at
-
Manukura v Chch Girls' too.
-
First semi-final result:
Mount Albert Grammar School 5 - 28 Hamilton GHS
-
Manukura 36 -12 Christchurch GHS in the 2nd SF.
-
First boys' semi-final result:
Westlake BHS 43 - 40 Tauranga BC
-
I only watched a few minutes but that field meant you were playing with the wind or into the wind.
-
Up the lake!!! Very even game
-
Another very close game:
Palmerston North BHS 19 - 20 Southland BHS
-
So a Blues v South Island final in the boys' Top 4 and a Chiefs v Hurricanes final in the girls' Top 4.
Not too surprised, because Tauranga BC and Palmy BHS were the 3rd and 4th Super 8 team.
-
PNBHS losing to a SI team, at home. The shame.
-
@Bovidae Haha, yeah. I actually thought Palmy were the better team, but a few times they were just too impatient and then finished a great passage of play with a terrible pass that went either straight to an opposition player or into touch. I didn't watch the game closely, but I think Palmy Boys' also scored more tries than SBHS and SBHS basically won it thanks to the boot of their kicker (incl penalty kicks).
-
@Stargazer Was it their yr 11 player?
Definitely an upset.
-
Gee Westlake are going well at the moment sportwise.
First XV in to the final
First XI just football team just won the nationals this arvo
Badminton team 2nd in the nationals yesterdayFirst XI cricket were Auckland champs too

@KiwiMurph liked the Westlake centre and the Southland 8 best...
Looked like the wind picked up the 2nd half too
SBHS champs
-
Southland Boys' are the Top 4 Boys' champions!
Westlake BHS 29 - 32 Southland BHS
-
@taniwharugby commentators said the Westlake centre and captain James Cameron was heading south - I presume to Crusaders.
-
Very convincing win for Manukura, who are the Top 4 Girls' champions!
Hamilton GHS 0 - 31 Manukura
-
Palmy Boys' finished 3rd in the Boys' Top 4.
Tauranga BHS 24 - 31 Palmerston North BHS
-
@Stargazer Final was early so SBHS could get back home tonight.
-
Only watched WBHS vs Southland but another really good close game. Similar to all 3 Westlake games I watched of late. Gutted the westlake lads couldnt get it done this year. Another very good season and only 1 loss for the year.
-
Who from the Southland set up looks like they could have a future? The Muliaina boys? The young Rutledge who missed the final, the second five who scored a stormer. Then there is Jimmy Taylor, the 16-year-old fullback and younger brother of Jack and Harry Taylor. Here is hoping some of these lads get themselves into the professional arena.
-
I was surprised to see that SBHS won the final. Quite the achievement, and the first SI school to win since CBHS in 2006.
It will be interesting to see how many of their players make the NZ Schools and Barbarians squads.
-
Most of the squad will have been selected, and the majority won't have been at the Top 4. With no games on Sky anymore you don't get to see those players.
-
@SouthernMann I liked the 8 for SBHS, tall, rangy good pace and balance, I think one of the Muliaina's was at 10? He looked handy too, as did the FB who has a good kick on him.
-
I expect both Sacred Heart and St Kents to be well represented. Rico Simpson, the Sacred Heart 1st 5 looked really good for the Māori U18s last year. There were a few Yr12s in the NZ Schools team last year as well.
-
The other thing about Southland BHS winning is that the Moascar Cup is back in the SI. Westlake held it for 2 days. I hope they got some photos.

Yeah I was impressed by the 8 too. Not huge but may still grow. Decent workrate!
-
Good yarn here on the SBHS triumph.
